Hughes Putting On A Show

Sat 29 Mar, 12:10 AM

Barry Hughes promised boxing fans an "extravaganza" at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow on Saturday night.

The boss of Braveheart Promotions has lined up a 10-fight show topped by his boxer Willie Limond taking on Martin Watson for the vacant IBO Intercontinental Lightweight Championship.

Hughes expects a host of Celtic and Rangers players to make their way to ringside just hours after the Old Firm derby at Ibrox where they will be joined by some stars from the world of television and film.

Hughes said that he expects his show to complete a momentous day of sport in Glasgow.

He said: "The fans should expect an extravaganza and I know that they will be absolutely delighted.

"It is more than just boxing, it's a sense of occasion.

"Boxing is showbusiness and I want it to be like Las Vegas.

"There is more to Scottish sport than football and fans should know that I feel that it is my duty to make sure that big nights like this are available.

"It's a full night of entertainment and it will make people glad to be there and feel that they are a part of something.

"There will be big names from the world of football and most of the Old Firm will be getting their suits on and heading down there."

Hughes is looking for some return from boxing fans, saying: "I am looking for commitment from them.

"I have put on 10 big fights and 10 good fights.

"I could have quite easily got Willie and opponent from abroad but we haven't taken any shortcuts.

"We've brought Michael Gomez up from Manchester, we have Kenny Anderson, the Commonwealth gold medalist, and young Kris Carslaw from Paisley.

"So I'm sure that it will be an interesting night and it will be a great way to end the month, two great sporting events on the same day."
