Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, making his debut in the Miami Masters, was tested by Juergen Melzer before the Frenchman won 6-7 7-5 6-1 to reach the third round.
Tsonga, who has a career-high world ranking of 12 and enjoys a 13-5 win-loss record this season, had to fight hard to overcome Austria's Melzer who dogged him throughout the first two sets, winning the first in a tiebreak.
In the second, Tsonga got a gift from Melzer who conceded four points in a row from 15-0 to lose his serve and the set. He took a 3-0 lead in the decider helped by two aces.
"Maybe he was not very good in the third set," Tsonga said of the way he eventually breezed to victory in a match lasting just over two hours. "He played very well in the two first sets and I was lucky to win the second set."
Andy Roddick ground out a 5-7 6-2 6-4 win over qualifier Viktor Troicki of Serbia to reach the third round.
The sixth-seeded American struggled to find his form but held on to wrap up the win having broken Troicki's spirit with a fantastic shot to secure the first point of the last game.
With Troicki serving at 5-4 down, Roddick hit a stunning crosscourt forehand winner that landed on the line leaving the American to pump his fist as the crowd rose to cheer.
"I was pretty lucky," Roddick said of the shot. "I didn't even see it when I hit it. I heard people yell and scream afterwards and I figured that was a good thing.
"As far as freak show trick shots go, that's up there. You don't hit shots like that every day," he added.
In other second round matches, Dudi Sela of Israel upset 14th seed Tommy Robredo of Spain 7-6 6-1 while Julien Benneteau of France beat 19th seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 3-6 6-4 7-6.
