Gary Speed has been a key factor in Sheffield United's revival, according to manager Kevin Blackwell.Former Leeds, Everton, Bolton and Newcastle midfielder Speed has played an increasingly influential role for the Blades since arriving at Bramall Lane at the turn of the year.
Blackwell told the club's official website: "He controls things on the pitch and has a great brain on him, knowing when to go forward or sit in.
"It's fair to say that the lads are inspired by him, especially as he can do it on the pitch and not just talk a good game."
Blackwell added: "He's a vital ingredient for us in midfield because of his nous and experience - the rest of the lads in that area are still young."
Speed was handed the skipper's armband in the weekend win over Bristol City and responded with both goals in the 2-1 win that kept alive their outside play-off chances.
