Chester manager Simon Davies was a relieved man after his side held on to earn the point they needed from a 0-0 draw at home to Stockport. The result secured Chester's Football League status and sent Mansfield down.
City keeper John Danby was the hero with a string of superb saves to deny a County side who put them under the cosh throughout the second half despite already having one eye on the play-offs.
Chester also got a stroke of luck with a contentious penalty incident when Adam Proudlock appeared to be brought down by Paul Linwood, but Davies was delighted with the result.
He said: "We worked ever so hard and there were some fabulous performances from some of our players, especially from John Danby. We've also had the rub of the green that has been missing in recent matches, particularly with the penalty incident.
"We dug in and that's what it takes to get out of a situation like this. With three of four additions we can push on next season.
"I was nervous from the first minute to the last. At times we were a bit tense and they didn't have the pressure we did and opened up in the second half, but we stuck at it and got the result we deserved."
