Carlos Sastre will race in next month's Giro d'Italia, his Cervelo team said.
Last year's Tour De France winner will encounter a difficult field with Astana's Lance Armstrong among the top names due to ride in the May 9-31 race.
"We are going for a top result in the general classification with the leader and Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre," Cervelo TestTeam sports director Jean-Paul van Poppel said.
"He will get support from the entire team to reach a top three place in the general classification."
The team's Norwegian sprinter Thor Hushovd has, however, decided to skip the Giro to concentrate on July's Tour de France.

Contador would not destroy the field. He barely won last years weak Giro. Basso will win (and would win even if Contador was in the race). By the way why was Contador not punished even though he was just as guilty as Basso? --- I know because in Spain they just ignored the facts and in Italy they are serious about getting rid of the cheats.
Contador will not win the tour this year either. It will be one of Basso (if he rides), Andy Shcleck, or Armstrong.
To bad for Giro, Contador would not defend his title, and destrouy everybody, but on TDF he would be there on best form to destroy all riders on 20th stage
It seems odd how Cervelo (via the team director) is quoted as aiming for 'a top three place in the general classification'. While it's good to get on the podium in a big event like the Giro, shouldn't they be trying to win it outright?
