Premier League - Newcastle to pay £5.2m for Gutierrez

Newcastle are to pay Real Mallorca £5.2 million for Jonas Gutierrez after reaching an agreement with the Spanish club.

The Argentinian joined the Magpies last summer after using FIFA's controversial Article 17 in order to complete the deal.

That ruling enables any player between the age of 23 and 28 to buy out their contract if they have been at the same club for three years or more.

Mallorca always claimed they were entitled to some compensation and had been looking for £12m

The matter has dragged on for some time but it has now been resolved to Mallorca's satisfaction, with the Islanders confirming the settlement on their official website.

Mallorca will receive 20 per cent of any future sale and are set to give half of their £5.2m fee to Gutierrez's former club Velez Sarsfield.

"Gutierrez gave a lot for us and we gave a lot for him," said Mallorca sporting director Nando Pons.

"I think this is an agreement that is good for all parties."

  6. Ken A, I would just like to ask, do you get on very well with your neighbours. Do you find that when you bump in to someone in the street that you know, they always seem to be in a hurry.

  7. It's just one thing on top of another at this club!
We must've broke a few billion mirrors i reckon!!!
Never mind, we've been ready for the drop all season so it's not really that painful.
Hopefully, with a bit of overdue luck, we'll come back from this better and stronger.
There's some good neutral people out there wishing this club well; i now acknowledge them all! The best way to deal with the a(reseholes) is to simply ignore them.

  8. I agree. 5.2m is too much for the whole team. Looking at their roster, I couldn't believe these players are going down to Championship.
