Argentina happy to let Tevez rest

Thu 29 May, 08:30 PM

Argentina will not call up Carlos Tevez for the World Cup qualifier with Brazil as the forward is allowed to rest after a long season.Tevez, who is banned for the June 15 qualifier against Ecuador after being sent off against Colombia last year, would be available to face Brazil on June 18 in Belo Horizonte.

However, Alfio Basile has decided the 24-year-old needs some time to relax after only finishing his club campaign with the Champions League final victory over Chelsea on May 21 in Moscow.

He said: "He deserves some holidays. He has played a lot recently and he should rest."

Lionel Messi said on Wednesday Argentina would be looking for revenge against Brazil after 3-0 defeats in their last two matches against the Selecao - in an international friendly in 2006 in London and the 2007 Copa America final in Venezuela.

Basile agrees with the Barcelona forward.

He said: "Playing them (Brazil) is always a grudge match.

"It's a derby Argentinians always want to win. Anyway, we must focus on the Ecuador game firstly. The two upcoming friendlies will be useful to watch some players."

Argentina are playing two friendlies, against Mexico and the United States, on June 4 and 8, respectively.

Basile added: "As we have two years to go before the World Cup, I think this is the right moment to try some experiments. I will make some tactical changes, maybe with three or five defenders."
