Veteran midfielder John Doolan has quit Rochdale to take up a player-coach position at Blue Square North outfit Southport.The 34-year-old, who was signed by previous manager Steve Parkin in 2006, made 90 appearances for Dale and scored five goals.

"John is a fantastic character and will be missed," Dale boss Keith Hill told the club's official website.

"He always gave 100% and provided a fantastic example to the young players in the dressing room."
