Wales boss John Toshack no longer feels "frightened to death" when he sends a team of raw youngsters into the international arena. The 59 year-old was encouraged by Wales' 1-0 win in Reykjavik on Wednesday, extending their record to six unbeaten games and four successive clean sheets.
But he accepts what was the youngest ever Wales senior line-up must now raise their standards even further ahead of Sunday's tough game in Rotterdam against a quality Holland side playing their final warm-up match ahead of the Euro 2008 finals.
Still missing several long-term injured players, including Danny Gabbidon, James Collins, Gareth Bale and Simon Davies - and with stand-in skipper Carl Fletcher carried off after only 39 minutes with ankle ligament damage - Toshack's raw recruits were very impressive against Iceland.
Manchester City teenager Ched Evans scored the winner on his debut, and Toshack had eight Under-21 players on the pitch at the end, with West Ham's Jack Collison and Wolves' new recruit Sam Vokes also making their debuts.
That took the total of debuts under Toshack in less than four years to 32, which reveals the extent of his youth revolution.
Toshack said: "In our last 17 games we have only lost three, against Germany, the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus. We have won nine and drawn the rest.
"We are encouraged because we are continuing to chalk up decent results with a much-changing side full of youngsters. We have been missing what would be five of our best 11: Collins, Bale, Gabbidon, Craig Bellamy and Davies.
"A few years ago that situation would have frightened me to death. But we do have more strength in depth now."
