Premier League - Davies predicts new faces at Villa

Eurosport - Fri, 29 May 16:08:00 2009

Curtis Davies is expecting Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill to make a host of new signings this summer to boost their chances of finally securing Champions League football.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Aston Villa-West Brom Curtis Davies - 0

Villa were on course for a top four finish in the Premier League when they held a six-point advantage over Arsenal at the beginning of March. But they ran out of steam in the final two months of the campaign as operating with one of the smallest squads in the division appeared to take its toll.

O'Neill brought in several new faces last summer, when he spent around £45 million, and central defender Davies is anticipating a similar influx before the 2009-10 season gets under way.

Davies told PA Sport: "I expect a lot of ins. I don't know about outs. We have got one of the squads that has used the least number of players again.

"I am sure the gaffer wants to build the squad rather than be breaking it apart. It will be an interesting summer. Last summer I think we signed something like six players so I can imagine something along similar lines.

"If people see the progression we have made as a team, and we get the right names here, they could help push us into the top four."

  4. Khanhhuyen, do not confuse cash with class. Last season before a ball was kicked pundits voted 20 to 1 in favour of Spurs rather than Villa to pose the greatest threat to the top four, and in the end it was Everton, by a point. It is easy to buy a misfit that you cannot predict will be one until too late. Even MON - who had Heskey before - spent good money on a player who more than anyone else caused Villa's attack to fail. That without him being a bad player, he just got in everyone's way with less chance of a clean finish to any chance to score.

Everton have a thin squad, but they end the season with a better team than us, just, when all fit. Barring injury they should be up there again. City and Spurs find a new way to flop every season, so I will not bet on them coming good until it happens.
