Premier League - Shearer future still not settled

Eurosport - Fri, 29 May 14:41:00 2009

Newcastle are still attempting to finalise a deal to secure Alan Shearer as their manager.

FOOTBALL Newcastle boss Alan Shearer looks on as his side are relegated from the Premier League following a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa - 2

Owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias are keen to come up with a package which will persuade Shearer he will have the tools for the job.

However, until agreement is reached, supporters will have to remain patient in anticipation of what will be a crucial decision for the club's future.

The club has already started to lay off staff - around 150 employees, many of them part-time, had earlier been informed their jobs were in jeopardy.

Shearer has already provided Ashley - whose Sports Direct International business on Thursday sold its directly-owned stake in JJB Sports for a small profit - with an outline of how he would want to approach the job.

He has explained how he would revamp a squad which proved ill-suited to the task of retaining Premier League status, despite a massive wage bill.

Any new manager would have to substantially reduce expenditure on salaries, which currently amounts to more than £70 million.

Some big earners will inevitably leave as they look elsewhere for football at the highest level, although the prospect of cashing in on £10million striker Obafemi Martins if the club chose to do so would be hampered by a lingering groin problems which requires further surgery.

Others may have to stay if Newcastle cannot find buyers. But if Shearer retains the job, the chances of controversial midfielder Joey Barton remaining on board are minimal. The 26-year-old, a £5.8m signing from Manchester City, has been injured for much of his time at St James' Park.

He has also served a term in jail for common assault and affray, but it was his stand-up row with Shearer in the dressing room at Anfield after he was needlessly sent off in a 3-0 defeat by Liverpool on May 3 which proved the final straw.

  2. hey up connoly,
did you observe comment 33,oh by the way,you seem to think i am knocking nufc, granny just tells how it is,and, whats everyone else saying here, perhaps you have not noticed.I can understand your dissapointment, youve had a terrible season, but you must admit that the debacle that is nufc is big,yes big news,i cannot seriously remember such an event causing so much interest. The general public have been absolutely mesmerized by the comedy at nufc, and, its not over is it,looks like there is lots more to come, more big news just around the corner, alot of my predictions appear to have materialised.
whilst you bang on about your little theories, you,as always are missing the big picture.
Ashley will offload, nufc will be stuck with paying premiership players, shearer will pull away, the club is already in freefall, big buyer somewhere some arab perhaps, the club of geordies will be owned, yes owned by foreigners instead of a cockney, how apt.anyway con, dream your little dreams, you might wake up when nufc, becomes ua/nufc/emirates,one last thing, how many geordies actually play for the club.

  3. Impactclean, I really dont want to bat backwards and forwards pointless meaningless debate, I feel I have to spell everything out for you like Owen for instance. So you think he will have to stay at Newcastle because nobody else will have him (your comment 33, please dont come back and say it's not what you meant or said I really dont want to know). He's out of contract, free to go where he pleases whether anyone wants him or not, he's not our problem anymore. If you still think he will be at the club next season, do you think with the financial situation we are in we will be offering him big wages to stay on for more of the same. I'm not going to insult you by telling you to keep up or get real, just carry on with your anti Toon comments but stop putting my surname with one 'N' missing to them they are too daft to reply to

  4. paulo179,
I hear exactly what you are saying, but i've said this before: until Alan Shearer has had his go at managing Newcastle United, no other manager will be able to take the job in peace - his shadow will always be looming large. I will forever defend Alan Shearer's record of 1 win in 8 games, simply because he had absolutely nothing to work with - that squad of players is possibly the worst i have ever witnessed in all my time supporting NUFC.

  5. heyup cameron,
you seem to be the only one pumping up the for shearer brigade,1 from 8,your excuse is away games and superior opposition, isnt that what the premiership and the rest is all about.
the only reason ashley wants shearer,is there is nobody out there who would want this job, shearer is the toons fool, there is no war chest, just a bunch of overrated expensive players which nobody would be interested in,damaged goods if you like,he might get a few bob at the car boot sale, and then what, you gonna buy kaka.

  6. Cameron, I am not going to judge Shearer on the back end of this season but you have to accept that it is a big gamble to employ a Manager with so little management experience.
The first objective for Newc is to sort out the playing staff (no easy task) and try and get back into the prem asap. The stats are loaded against Shearer but we will have to wait and see how he performs next saeson (assuming he takes the job).
I can't help thinking that Shearer will get all the credit if he succeeds, but if he isn't up to the job, the fans will blame Ashley for employing an inexperienced Manager.

WHAT IS THE NONSENSE OF HOME AND AWAY GAMES?PEOPLE PLAY WORLD CUP FAR FROM HOME AND WIN FOOTBALLER ARE PRO,SO HOME OR AWAY MAN DONT DECIDE WINS.ALAN SHEARER MAYBE A GOOD PLAYER IN HIS DAY BUT THAT IS NOT A CRITERIA TO BE A GOOD COACH OK.8 GAMES AND 1WIN MATE IS A POOR RESULT SIMPLE AS THAT.

why don't you stick to the man united pages if you haven't got anything constructive to say!
Do you honestly think messrs ferguson, wenger or hiddink could've done ANY better with that disgraceful squad of players! Have you never heard the old saying of a silk purse and a sow's ear . . .obviously not!!!
Shame on you for judging a man after 8 lousy games, 3 of which were against teams ranked 2nd, 3rd & 6th (2 of which were away from home) - but then again, you are a man united supporter (who has probably never seen them play live) so it is to be expected.
And what you are all tending to forget is that the team he inherited was NOT what you would call a'decent' side; it's not as if he had something to work with, like Redknapp obviously had at Spurs. If this squad of players is that good, then there will be plenty of interest from Premiership clubs in the summer for them. . . . . . . NOT!!!!

  12. conolly,you serious,
you mean another club would want any of these players, and would purchase their contracts,i mean of course in the premiership, cos thats the only offer they would accept, can you see anyone offering owen a nice contract, give me a clue, who do you reckon then, manu arsenal chelsea god help me "liverpool" mind you hes on a free at the moment,if he couldnt do it at newcastle, sorry to say ,you cant get any lower can you,get my point.hed be better of at newcy, they dont want him either.

  15. impactclean, I know it's scandalous but their contracts will be paid up if they dont ask to go using any fee's recieved, how did you not know that. I know it will be difficult to get rid of some of them but they have to go because they aren't good enough.

  18. What person in their right mind would take this on.
surely shearer cannot expect to remedy anything with this situation.
if he does, then i can only say "more fool him"and of course shows emphatically his inexperience, all the signs are down, except the forsale sign, the club is trapped,as they say between the devil and the deep blue sea.
The only true thing and possible reliable thing is the support of the fans, who, god bless em, will take anything thrown at em.
    Without their support,what then!
Are the high falootin owner chairman directors/fat players, considering the fans.no no no no no!its cash cash cash and more cash.
al of these so called managers /players owe their position to the loyal toon fans, unfortunately they have placed therselves seemingly above them, and need to be brought down to earth.!!!!!!!!!!

  19. The longer this goes on the less likely I think Shearer will take the job. Ashley doesn't want the club and is unlikely to want to pump any more money into it and I think this is one of the issues. This needs to be resolved soon because the clear out alone is a massive job aswell as searching for new players. I hope Shearer does take it but I'm bracing myself for Ashleys next big mistake that he will be appologising for.
