Premier League - Shearer future still not settled

Eurosport - Fri, 29 May 14:41:00 2009

Newcastle are still attempting to finalise a deal to secure Alan Shearer as their manager.

FOOTBALL Newcastle boss Alan Shearer looks on as his side are relegated from the Premier League following a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa - 2

Owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias are keen to come up with a package which will persuade Shearer he will have the tools for the job.

However, until agreement is reached, supporters will have to remain patient in anticipation of what will be a crucial decision for the club's future.

The club has already started to lay off staff - around 150 employees, many of them part-time, had earlier been informed their jobs were in jeopardy.

Shearer has already provided Ashley - whose Sports Direct International business on Thursday sold its directly-owned stake in JJB Sports for a small profit - with an outline of how he would want to approach the job.

He has explained how he would revamp a squad which proved ill-suited to the task of retaining Premier League status, despite a massive wage bill.

Any new manager would have to substantially reduce expenditure on salaries, which currently amounts to more than £70 million.

Some big earners will inevitably leave as they look elsewhere for football at the highest level, although the prospect of cashing in on £10million striker Obafemi Martins if the club chose to do so would be hampered by a lingering groin problems which requires further surgery.

Others may have to stay if Newcastle cannot find buyers. But if Shearer retains the job, the chances of controversial midfielder Joey Barton remaining on board are minimal. The 26-year-old, a £5.8m signing from Manchester City, has been injured for much of his time at St James' Park.

He has also served a term in jail for common assault and affray, but it was his stand-up row with Shearer in the dressing room at Anfield after he was needlessly sent off in a 3-0 defeat by Liverpool on May 3 which proved the final straw.

  3. the answer is to get rid of .....Owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias and if only one goes it would be best to get rid of the MD.... he obviously put the wrong team together!!!!!

  4. The wonderful newcastle team of the year are all on holiday now,no doubt in their foreign hide aways purchased by the toon fans, and they will not be worried about their wages when they return, because when their contracts were confirmed,a clause states i hear, that should they be relegated they would not lose,or diminish their fat pay packets.
And so,next season the toon will be paying premiership money for championship football.
Of course this clause was accepted by the the management, because in their high and mighty opinion, they believed that relegation was laughable.
When the players return from their well earned holiday, they will not be too interested or motivated in returning newcastle to the top flight, they may as well sit back and enjoy the ride, shearer will have difficulty moving this lot on,but,i hear he wants to revamp, yes thats right revamp, not replace this rather expensive bunch of misfits, and so i think that means toon will be blessed with the same bunch of sh--te next season,oh ,i almost forgot,That includes toons favourite son Mr j Barton.
I look forward to the next episode,"what next",,,,,?Granny

  5. As we can see from these comments, the toon are again trying to influence a major decision,I repeat my previous comments, shearer should be no 2,that keeps the fools happy "get a top line manager,eg venebles or the like, but the real problem is,would any top line manager be interested in the mess that is newcastle united.
Ime afraid the position for newcastle, should shearer become manager is bleak indeed.!!

  7. Why is Ashley messing about the obvious choice is Dennis Wise....a Newarsehole United Ledgend and as his first team coach Mickey Owen.....who I think deserves a substantial pay rise for his efforts in avoiding relegation. Joey Barton as Social Conveynor in charge of affairs down the Big Market and maybe Mark Viduka offloaded back to Glasgow Sceptic.......Maybe Strachan is the answer he has experience in Relagation a la Coventry.....can see Bladen Races busy this year....hope the singer is better than the fat opera boy hired for the last few games.........from a ver very happy content blue nose Glasgow Rangers Fan......We Are the People

  11. Cameron ok mate,Know where you're coming from now,Shearer maybe not the best choice but until he's shot his load no one else stands a chance as people will always be asking what if? ok point taken buddy,I honestly found it hard to believe you truely thought he was the right man for the job,but looking at it from an NUFC 's supporters point of view (revoltingly hard) I realise now that he is the only option, once he fcuks up a real manager and get stuck in.

  14. Shearer is like Klinsmann! Don't keep him. He needs to be assistant coach to a real coach first before he attempts to coach a proper team. it would be a mistake in the long run. unless an experienced coach decides to assist him, all would be an illusion. I like Shearer and respect the man, but he is not ready. Coaches need time and Newcastle is not the kind of club that is used to experiment and move on regardless of where they play next year.

  16. Can't help feeling he's not the man for the job Cameron,I know you keep talking about Keane being inexperienced but let's face it Keane is a tour de force,a one man cyclone,Shearer just doesn't have that x-factor to coin a modern term, great player but a little too arrogant and aloof as manager, blaming everyone and his girlfriend except his own shortcomings,I've had my fun, believe me I'd like to see NUFC come back up next season,I'm only human I want to see them below us,but not that far below, will miss the heat of the derby games.

  17. Here you go again, 'we want it now', let them sort it out. Anyway without any abuse etc., i read 'Shearer is the only man for the job', tell me why. Nobody has mentioned any other coach, is this the geordie boy thing again, so with sense explain it to me, because from where i am seeing this and many others alike here they go again.
