Premier League - Torres signs new Liverpool deal

Liverpool have rewarded Fernando Torres with a new contract that will keep him at Anfield until at least 2013.

Although the Spain striker still had four years remaining on his original six-year contract, Liverpool have offered him improved terms and added an option to take the deal through to 2014.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said: "Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better."

He added: "Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club.

"He's a special talent but still has the hunger to improve his game."

Benitez is looking to secure the futures of his key players after watching them push Manchester United all the way in the title race this season before settling for second place.

Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger, Steven Gerrard and Benitez himself have already signed new contracts in the last two months.

"We've made huge progress this season and now we need to take the next step," Benitez added on the club's website.

"We are building something special here and securing such important players on long-term deals means we can move forward with confidence. This sends out a very positive message to everyone connected with the club."

Can someone tell me, is Raffas obsession with chasing­ english players for over inflated prices anything to do­ with the rule changes I heard of about the number of­ foreign players? or am I barking up the wrong tree? Coz­ it strikes me that 18m for Barry isnt a world away from­ 26m for Tevez. And that to me is a no brainer.

  2. Dazmanutd, a question for you...If what you say about­ Torres is true, what of Christiano Ronaldo,? Who was­ sulking and refusing to commit after the Barca game? at­ least Torres has the cajones to commit !! Imagine if he­ doesnt commit, and you lose Tevez on a free, that could­ make for an interesting year.

  9. Its the goal difference that matters am not too worried­ about the defence! We ended the season with the best­ goal difference! That tels me the balence is good!
    We­ need a player who can make a difference to the 0 - 0­ games! A player like Teves is perfect if we can get­ him? He has power, He will score and for sure his work­ rate will help the defence!

  11. OK for Liverpool 19 years is a very long time not to­ win the title! But when you look at the other top­ teams in the prem like Man U, hey its not so long ManU­ went 30 - 40 twice? years without a title not to­ mention the other top teams! This is the strongest­ Liverpool team I'v seen since Dalglish, Hansen,­ Souness....... is only a matter of time now!

    Liverpool need to strengthen their defence it looked­ very flimsy this season , something must be done to­ the
    back four , i do not think Arbeloa is strong enough­ to hold the right back he is very slow his tackles are­ not positive , also the left back when encountering a­ skillful speedy winger then the whole area is exposed­ while a new addition to the attacking force in the­ likes of Tevez or David villa would do Liverpool just­ fine .
