Wales international Ward, who has 582 senior career appearances to his name, was one of seven players released by the Black Cats on Thursday as they announced their retained list for the 2009-10 campaign.

He told the club's official website: "I still have a great appetite for football, but unfortunately my body hasn't, so it's a no-brainer for me to retire from playing."

He added: "I know that if I continue with my playing career, I could do myself long-term damage, so sadly it's time to stop.

"But I am very keen to pass on my experience and am looking to get into coaching."

  1. Thanks for all your effort's Wardy, but I think 35s still a bit young for a goalie fella.
Surely you could get a game for a club in the lower league's or something, Just so happens that I might know of an opening nearby and you wont even have to move house as well?
