Bain: Players will leave Ibrox

Rangers chief executive Martin Bain admits the club still need to trim their squad this summer - but refused to say whether any big-name players would depart.

The need to sell was eased by last weekend's Clydesdale Bank Premier League triumph and manager Walter Smith has admitted he would be happy to lose several members of a first-team squad that numbered around 28 for most of the season.

"I wouldn't say we would have to lose some of the big earners because that would only set the hares running as to who would possibly go and who wouldn't," Bain told Sky Sports News.

Bain added: "We have always said - and I say we as myself and Walter - that we have carried a vast number in the squad this season.

"We do indeed need to trim the squad from a financial point of view and a sporting point of view, and we'll endeavour to do so in the summer."

Bain admitted he had "no idea" whether the Homecoming Scottish Cup final against Falkirk would be former skipper Barry Ferguson's last game for Rangers.

With Maurice Edu and Pedro Mendes struggling with injury, Ferguson may start his first game since being hit with a two-week suspension in April following his behaviour on Scotland duty.

Bain said: "His situation is that he has a year to go on his contract. He has played a vital role in the last couple of games in winning the championship.

"As was well documented, he made a mistake he apologised for it and we'll see where the summer takes us."

  4. The squad is way to big, it has been for 2 seasons. You­ dont need 28 first team players. 2 players in each­ position is enough plus a couple of youngsters. There­ is to much dead wood in there. Not just rangers have­ this problem, celtic do also. To many dud players just­ eating up money sitting on there contracts. Its not the­ players faults right enough its the idiots that hand­ out the contracts.
