Davies predicts new faces at Villa

Fri 29 May, 09:22 AM

Curtis Davies is expecting Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill to make a host of new signings this summer to boost their chances of finally securing Champions League football.

Villa were on course for a top four finish in the Barclays Premier League when they held a six-point advantage over Arsenal at the beginning of March. But they ran out of steam in the final two months of the campaign as operating with one of the smallest squads in the division appeared to take its toll.

O'Neill brought in several new faces last summer, when he spent around £45million, and central defender Davies is anticipating a similar influx before the 2009/10 season gets under way.

Davies told PA Sport: "I expect a lot of ins. I don't know about outs. We have got one of the squads that has used the least number of players again.

"I am sure the gaffer wants to build the squad rather than be breaking it apart. It will be an interesting summer. Last summer I think we signed something like six players so I can imagine something along similar lines.

"If people see the progression we have made as a team, and we get the right names here, they could help push us into the top four."

  1. Rahul, are you seriously thinking that Villa could attract top class talent anyway like Ribery or David Villa? Top class players want to play at the top class level (i.e. what Barry wants). That means Champions League. There is no point chasing around those players as a) we wouldn't pay them what they wanted and b) they wouldn't join us anyway. We need solid international players, world class like Ribery, Villa, Ronaldo etc.. may well come one day, but we need Champions League football and silverware over a number of seasons. You can't just instantly become a top European club, you need to work at it and earn the standard over a run of seasons.

As for blaming Heskey for the bad run - ridiculous. We went on a bad run mainly because we lost Laursen and then had a bad run of form which we just couldn't snap out of. Bad form and bad luck - getting Hiddic's first game in charge at Chelsea for example, had we played them the week prior, we'd probably have won.

Some of those games Heskey didn't even play in - how are they his fault - because he was on the Bus?

At least have some sense behind your arguments, not just apparent haterid of the player because he used to play for the Blues.

MON is probably the best manager we have had in decades, but even with a superb manager it appears some fans just are too impatient to appreciate that it takes time to build up a quality squad and go after the top 4. It may well take a couple more years. We need to hang onto the talent we've got and get increase the squad size with quality over quantity.

Yes the collapse in form was very disappointing and the problem is when you get on runs like that you either need quality to get you out of it or some good luck. Sadly I think we used up all our good luck early in the season!

We do need to improve next year and that means winning something, even if its the League Cup!

  2. steve, been a frustrated villa fan for over 40yrs, even other people in the media are saying that villa need 5-6 new players, heskey will never settle like petrov, maybe its a coincedence that villa's season went dowhill after heskey joined, his 1st game was portsmouth, then we won nothing till the newcastle game, MON cant handle big players, do u about him talking about world class players like the top 4? do u see villa connected to david villa or ribbery, actually world class players like barry want to leave like mellberg did, so i guess you happy staying a mid table team for another decade or so, watch MON will sign just bodies but not world class talent.

  3. 'He Can't handle them'. Wtf are you on? Are you even a Villa fan?

Heskey, will need time to see how he settles into the team (Petrov took 12-18 months to do so). Mellberg wanted to leave, there wasn't much we could do to stop that, he had afterall been with Villa for a number of years & got an offer from AC Milan, can't say I blame him in wanting a change!

Barry is another story and hopefully he will stay.

But as for saying MON can't handle them, never heard anything so stupid in my life. Ah yes I have - you describing Frediel as @#$&. Just goes to show what you know.

  4. can o neill sign big names and big players? he cant as he cant handle them, so we ll spend a whole lot of money on no- bodys like heskey, and let world class players like barry and mellberg leave, villa need six replacements for @#$% like freidal, davis, shorey, reo coker, gardner to name a few, then we need another six make the squad bigger so when players like albonganor(watever) have lazy days they can be replaced.

  5. Yup, sadly Curtis, you may be one of the guys who finds themselves having to fight for your place a bit more! We need a couple of international quality central defenders to make up for the loss of Laursen.
