Brentford striker Ross Montague has been told to prove he is worthy of a new contract with the club during pre-season.

The 20-year-old`s current contract with the Bees expires on June 30 and his future is currently in limbo after he was left off the club`s list of players released and players retained.

Bees' manager Andy Scott would like to see how the talented youngster, who missed most of the previous season with a cruciate injury, responds from the injury before offering him a long-term deal.

"We have given Ross the medical care we are obliged to and have not released him as I want to look at him in pre-season," Scott told the Hounslow Chronicle.

"It's a long injury to come back from, but he is progressing well, and if he shows the sort of form which got him into the first team in the first place, he could earn himself a new contract."
