Jones: Webber should go to Ferrari

Mark Webber should seriously consider a move to Ferrari if a proper offer is made, according to former world champion Alan Jones.

Jones, the last Australian to win the Formula 1 title, believes that Webber would find himself revitalised by an opportunity to race for the Maranello team.

Speaking in a podcast put together by the Australian Grand Prix organisers, Jones said: "Mark has already done one of the two things that most Formula 1 drivers would like to do, and that's win Monaco. The other one is to drive for Ferrari.

"I'm sure he'd have a look at it. If he goes to Ferrari, it could be a breath of fresh air - it's very prestigious and something really good to have on your CV. He gets on extremely well with [Fernando] Alonso, so maybe that could be a good way for him to go."

Webber's contract with Red Bull runs out at the end of this season, and his strong form in the opening part of this campaign has again ignited speculation that he is on Ferrari's radar as a potential replacement for Felipe Massa.

Although going up alongside Alonso would not be an easy thing to do, Jones reckons that Webber already faces a big challenge at Red Bull with Sebastian Vettel.

He added: "Personally, I think that Mark is with a good team (but) having said that, if he signed on with Red Bull next year he's still going to have Vettel as his team-mate, which is a pretty hard task."

  1. Sorry but i dont see Webber as any thing like a top ten driver. He is going to play the role of rubens barrichello for the rest of his time, and that said i would still take masa or barrichello and leave him as a test driver.

  2. Cant see Webber moving if he can stay where he is. He may get on better with Alonso than the wee nyaff he has to deal with now but that doesnt mean they would make good team mates. Ferrari have a problem on hand in that Massas not getting enough points as number 2 to keep them in contention for the constructors title, but would Alonso be happy with a new young whiz kid nipping at his heals, I think not! For that matter Red Bulls in the same kind of position with Vettel if they lose Webber (although they dont have the Massa problem as Webber is still taking in enough points to keep them on top for now) Vettel would not be happy with a new whizz kid nipping his heals either, hes having enough problems with Webber being slightly more consistant in the new car and not struggling so badly as he did last season. Now everythings evened out better with the top cars Vettel is having to race rather than drive to victory from pole and has found himself in the position where his team mate and the other drivers are no longer half a second a lap slower any more. (Although it might not seem so to him at the moment it is good for Vettel to be in this position now while hes still young before he gets to the stage of tripping over his ego thinking he is invincable) Much that Id love to see the likes of De Resta or one of the other promising young drivers get a drive in one of the more competative cars, to keep their number 1 drivers happy it would be difficult to see Red Bull or Ferrari being one of those. At this stage in Vettels career Id expect Red Bull to want to keep Webber as Number 2, but what Ferraris options will be, to keep Alonso happy if they cant light some kind of fire under Massa, are yet to be seen. Personally Id be well chuffed if Webber managed to stay consistantly there or thereabouts keep his head and beat the lot of them this year (as nobody expects him to do anything). Being consistant will be the key to the title this year as so many drivers are in the poin

  4. WilliamsFW14B. Show me where i have made excuses for Massa . As usual the idiots here started in the spring with the slagging off of the Ferrari during the unveiling. Some how that pretty well seems to be forgotten by the likes of people like PAUL who now have to make excuses for his praised McLaren / Lewis combination . Caught outright lying to FIA officials ( Liegate) and what do these morons say .." you have to lie if your boss tells you to ". Do they not have morals in their village ? All i know is that the experts here have predicted superstar Lewis in the best car to beat some guy named Alponso in an UGLY Ferrari. So far it doesn't look too good ... now does it.

  5. I bet Alonso is stronger than Vettel and Mark will face same problem if he goes to Ferrari.. dont forget, Alonso is currently driving an ASDA trolley and yet he manage to lead the championship

  6. So are you lot for real? Webber has had enough chances in decent cars..... What, like when he stepped UP to a Williams that was already going down fast from its prior glory days, to then go to Jaguar (where he outraced his team mates) which was a team still building, to then form a new team in which he still did pretty well all things considered. To lose the championship with Red Bull in the last few races of the season to a rather inconsistent and erratic (remember) but focused and Hungry Sebastian Vettel. No disgrace there as Vettel proved the following year. Someone commented that Webber is inconsistent...... He is equal second in the championship and apart from one race finish outside the top ten has probably been the most consistent driver this year. Yes he is aging but bad choices made at bad times has been his biggest downfall. Not as hungry anymore but can understand why. Give the guy a break, he still holds his own okay and makes a good team driver.

  7. sorry Alan I don't see it happening. Especially if RK can return to the sport. And even if that isn't the case Ferrari will snap up Perez before Webber. I really hope Mark can be the dark horse this year and steal the WDC.

  8. I still don't see any compassion in what you write. From Williams FW14B, on Tue 29 May 18:44 Little book of excuses? Is that the one that tells you why Massa in a Ferrari is below both Saubers, Williams, and Force India in the standings? Why despite all Mclarens woes, they still lead Ferrari by more than 20 points? I'm curious to know. From Williams FW14B, on Tue 29 May 17:57

  10. Charlie: I don't get people. Why would it be a "good tactic" to have 2 good drivers? Examine the past winners. Nearly all the champions were number 1 drivers. i.e. Vettel, Schumy etc. Now examine the ones who weren't: Senna-Prost (problems), Button-Hamilton (problems). Face it if you have two prima donnas in the team, you are asking for trouble. Better to have one. Now fine talking as a fan maybe two competitive drivers is better...but as a team boss? nah.. Oh and you will note that 2nd drivers do have a chance to win the WC and if they don't it's usually their own fault i.e. Irvine, Massa and Webber come to mind... They are "second" for a reason...because they are not consistent world champion prospects.

  11. i can see why they would want webber he is a good second place driver, but it would be better to go for someone who could win,for to long thet have gone for a second rate driver and one good driver.

  12. Williams FW14B: how long have you been watching F1? Not very long I would imagine. You must've missed the time when Massa got hit in the head at 180mph and had to have brain surgery. That pretty much explains why he had a poor start. I know you and the teams you follow would've dumped Massa by the road side after the 2nd race and replaced him, thus ruining his F1 carreer (he can still race for developing teams in future) but Ferrari are not like that. They have a thing you will never understand: LOYALTY. You have none. Williams have none. Mclaren have none (the way they treat Hamilton). Anything else? OH and you may want to stock up on ant-acids because Mclaren are just about done and Williams was a flash in the pan...p.s. Maldanado is completely mad...good luck with that. You need consistency to win in F1 (Montoya anyone?). Maldonado = Montoya 2. ;)

  13. This is all made up rubbish by non-Italian journalists because anyone who gives a glance at the Italian newspapers will note this has not been mentioned once, yet is pushed by the idiots who commentate and journos. Rubbish. If you know how Ferrari works you will know they will not just dump someone who has showed loyalty like Massa. Badoer was different, they didn't sack him and gave him his chance to race which he wanted. Fisi too. But Massa is a real Ferrari driver and no way will they tear up his contract for anyone...let alone Webber. Ferrari is like a family, a concept British teams will never understand (Hamilton case in point). Ferrari will keep Massa and then probably Perez will take his seat for next year. Webber....not even on the radar.

  17. I'm surprised that PAUL is even able to show his face here.. after all , a second rate driver to Lewis in an UGLY car is beating the worlds best driver in the best car . Go figure. Don't sweat .. PAUL will just dig into his little book of excuses.

  18. Webber with Ferrari and Alponso is like a marriage made in hell!! First, I don't think Alponso can cope let alone understand Webber's Aussie humour and neither can Webber understand Alponso's humour or the 'bull like a china shop' driving style of Alponso!! But, one thing for sure, both drivers will keep the fans guessing as to who will be the Number One driver!! I fail to see how Webber bowing down to Alponso, his driving style or his demanding ways. The only reason Webber would go to Ferrari is for the love of money rather than the love of Ferrari or for the love of his driving partner!!

  19. Anyways enough of the Hamilton bashing from me today. Webber has had enough chances in a top car to prove his worth. Jason C is right. The race was over at the first corner. It was the only exciting bit of the whole procession. The only one who had a bit of a go at overtaking was Perez. Are Red Bull afraid to put some new young blood in and find that they are as good as Vettel? Methinks so.

From COLIN B, on Tue 29 May 16:44
  20. kmf - true indeed. Even at that, if not for Hungary and Singapore Massa would still have won. I was sad about the outcome as a Ferrari fan but these things happen in F1 and we have to live with it and enjoy it no matter what!
