Clarets accept Saints' Jay bid - reports

Tue, 29 May 14:34:59 2012

Burnley have accepted a bid in the region of £7million from Southampton for striker Jay Rodriguez, according to various reports.

Nigel Adkins' Barclays Premier League newcomers had an offer rejected for the 22-year-old 12 months ago but are understood to have come closest to matching the Clarets' £8million valuation.

Rodriguez enjoyed a blistering campaign last term, netting 21 goals despite having his contribution limited from early March by hip and groin problems.

The former England Under-21 international is currently out of the country and is yet to meet with Saints officials to discuss personal terms.

Should the deal go through, it is set to surpass the £6.5million recouped by Burnley for the sale of Scotland striker Steve Fletcher to Wolves two years ago.

Burnley declined to comment on the story when contacted by Press Association Sport.

  2. When Burnley reached the premiership, Barry Kilby said" We are in a fantastic position financially. The money we have received from getting to the premiership will stand us in good stead for years to come" Amazing that there is none left. We were the first team to operate in the top flight of english football without any debt. Take a look at the directors that are getting a considerable amount of return for their investment. Brendan Flood put 1 million into the club and as soon as his business got into trouble asked for it back. Did he get it? No, he got 2.5 million back and 4.5 million paid to his company, "MODUS". He remains on the board, lining his greedy pockets. So guess where any transfer fee for Jay is gonna go.... Floods bank account no doubt

  3. A good bit of business with the strikers already in place at Burnley, will the money stretch to a goalie, a centre half and a midfield player!

  7. What a ambitious club- yeah for money, not football- we sell one of our best assets for what, to fill the pockets of the board. this team is a championship mid table outfit and kept there by the board, the club does not listen to fans views, and who are the fans -thats right the ones that put the monies there in the first place. without the gate revenue lets see how far they'd go, Have to pay out there own pockets wouldent they. enough said after 50 years and my school days watching scool cups their. Turf moore the fortress smashed open by viking robbing board.

  8. Well that certainly sends out a message to all Burnley fans as to how ambitious we are for next season. Who's next then? Did we need the £7 million then. Should be able to afford at least half a dozen Bournemouth players with £7 million. :(
