Pienaar: We can break into top four

Sun 29 Jun, 10:00 AM

Steven Pienaar has backed his Everton team-mates to pull off 'Mission Impossible' and claim a top-four finish in the 2008/09 season. In the past five campaigns, the Toffees are the only club outside of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United to have finished in the top four in the Premier League.

David Moyes' side came close to claiming Champions League football last term but faltered in the latter stages, with Merseyside rivals Liverpool eventually landing fourth place.

But Pienaar, who signed permanently at Goodison Park from Borussia Dortmund in April, is convinced Everton can repeat their previous achievement of breaking up the 'big four' in the forthcoming campaign.

"I am quite happy with my first season," the South Africa international told Sky Sports News. "If we work hard again then nothing is impossible. We can get into the top four."

  2. I am a lifelong blues supporter , but not sure this is realistic given the comparison between the finances available for new signings at the `big 4` compared to David Moyes budget. Moyes can`t be faulted for his ability to sign players for small transfer fees and get them to premier standard, but we need at least 4 new players for next season to achieve Pienaar`s, and all blues supporters, hope of a top 4 place. It is essential to replace Carsley , another striker as Vaughan is too prone to injuries that are always long term. A defender who can play more than one position and cover for Howard. The board need to support Moyes in the transfer market as they did last year for the signing of the Yak , and let Moyes improve the squad to make the top four place a realistic expectation. The injuries to Cahill and Arteta showed how damaging the loss of key players can be so we need adequate replacements within the squad. I predict greater success in Europe this season and another league season close on the tails of the top 4. Forever Everton !

  4. Everton do not have the squad to play hard workman-like football all season. By february they will be out of steam and out of ideas. Better to be realistic and settle for a Uefa Cup spot. The top four are the only teams to be able to lure the best players in the world, and will only get better.

  5. David Moyes and his Everton side are a funny bunch... Despite finishing 5th in the league with 65 points, they are actually closer to the 9th place team with 55 points than to the 4th place team with 76 points i.e 11 points between them and Liverpool and 10 points between them and Manchester City. So finishing 5th does not necessarily mean the gap between them and 4th is narrow. Please Messers Moyes and Pienaar be realistic.

  6. Barring injuries again (like to Arteta and Cahill, two of the most inspirational and influential players in the side), I think the top four will be looking over their shoulders again. I saw the betting in the newspaper last week, that put Everton at 200-1 for the title, and Tottenham at 60-1. I know that Tottenham have been a very under-rated side of late, a good side at that, but I wouldn't put their chances above Everton's.

  7. Yes, we can break into the top 4 but before that I do think that we need a few more players as we are lack of depth in the squad. With Yobo and Hibbo out early of the season, we need some reinforcements. I hope Moyes can act fast as the players are getting more expensive each day. Nevertheless, the board has to give Moyes the money... common Kenwright! you need to pay to get your hand onto the European Cup prize money not asking UEFA for relocation.... well, at least do both at the same time.
