Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes it is important for Manchester United to keep hold of star winger Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.Real Madrid are determined to sign the Portuguese flyer but United are adamant that he will not be sold and have been angered by the 'public pursuit' of their player.
Ronaldo himself has been fairly quiet on the subject of his future but Wenger expects him to remain at Old Trafford.
He told the Sunday Mirror: "I think Ronaldo will stay at United because I cannot see the club making the kind of statements they have made if they have no assurance from Ronaldo that he will stay.
"Once a club of their stature say he will stay, he has to stay. If he doesn't stay you look weak, weaker than if you said nothing at all."
Wenger admires how United have handled the matter and hopes they hang on to Ronaldo, as he wants the Premier League to remain as strong as possible.
The Gunners boss also insists that Real Madrid have acted inappropriately, despite UEFA president Michel Platini suggesting on Saturday that their summer courting of Ronaldo had been 'normal'.
Asked if he would actually like to see Ronaldo head to Spain, Wenger replied: "No, not at all. I'm for stability. I want the English League to be the best league in the world and to know if you beat Man United, if you beat Chelsea, you are the best team in the world.
"It is not right what Real Madrid do, I agree. And there comes a point when somebody needs to make a stand against them.
"United have come out strongly at the moment and said 'No', and I give them credit for that."
United have said they would rather let Ronaldo rot in the reserves than join Real but Wenger is not convinced that such a strategy can last.
"You can think I'll leave this guy here if he sulks and play him in the reserves," said Wenger, who has had to deal with a similarly confusing transfer saga of his own with Emmanuel Adebayor.
"But it doesn't work. It's a good solution in theory but on a daily basis it's impossible.
"That's why in the end I said I would only sell Nicolas Anelka if he said to me, 'I want to leave'. Then if you know he wants to go what can you do with a player who doesn't want to play for you any more?"

I totally agree with Paul's comments there... Ronaldo has always made trademark dives more than freekicks. Yet the marketing element involved here in the world of football is far greater emphasized on the attracting side of it, as in the players looks (that's why we have David Beckham as the most paid player), the great freekicks (like Ronaldo's) and the buyinh power a player posesses and so on...but the issue here really is that if Ronaldo wants to leave, well he's entittled to it, after all Real Madrid is a greater club that Man United will ever be. Remember a couple of season's back, Man United forced Fulham to sign Louis Saha and they got him, hell if that was fair, why the big deal?
Oh dear, Stephen, me jealous? I never said who I supported, why would I? I played rugby for 26 years and in those years England won the World Cup (2003), so jealously is not one of my traits. Pity the footie supporter who lives in a country who can't even qualify for European Championship. Enough said. As footie is thrusted down our throats, it is easy to spot what is wrong with the sport when you an independent observer. As for the most fouled player, you're wrong, that is Cesc Fabregas, I think you will find.
i think when clubs buy players they shouldn't always go on to sign long term contracts. Perhaps what we need is to change the rules so players cannot leave for nothing at the end of their contracts; coz as it stands it's flawed and a great way for players to get an automatic pay rise once their contract has 2 years remaining.
So managers would like to sign players onto long term contracts, which are then rarely honored for the full duration.
The situation will only get worse as it stands. more and more players like ronaldo will threaten to leave for a payrise and more and more players like ronaldo will sign 5 year contracts and plan to leave after 1.
football is not bout personal desires of a player..its a profession, we negotiate, reach an agreement n then we sign contract, so ronaldo must play for manchester united..not only ronaldo, every player should honour thier contact, if they wanna leave the club they can tell their manager, its up to the manager to them go or not..if not every play must play with their team with full commitment..thats football..play for passion n not money..money is important, but one player must respect his club n fans..cos without fans he is nobody..
Paul H...... your so jealous. The most fouled player in the Premiership has no need to cheat. I think you would reconsider your comments if he played for your team......then again you never said who you support did you? Manchester United best team in the world.
Steve H( Manchester)
Ha, ha, ha, C. Ronaldo is a good player, yet he bought a cheating element in the premiership as well, an element that the premiership could well do without. Yes, he suited Man U, as the culture for cheating is well established my the manager, how can we forget the week in, week out goals in extra time, how was it that Man U, could have extra, extra time to score the winner, when all other games would finish in accordance with the indicated period of extra time? Still, that was a Championship won and then Renaldo arrived and his ability to 'win' penalties in normal time negated the need for extra, extra time. Oh, suit you sir, roll around on the ground after not being touched, yes, suit you sir!
i agreed with wenger on this issue of c.ronaldo not leaving for madrid because the player has brought a lot of challeng into the role of play in the premiership.
