Beaten Joachim Not Too Low

Sun 29 Jun, 11:09 PM

Joachim Low refused to be downbeat despite watching his Germany side fall to a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2008 final against Spain.

Luis Aragones' side claimed their first silverware since 1964 courtesy of Fernando Torres' clever first-half finish.

Low's attempts to cajole his side from the sidelines failed to reap the desired dividends, as Michael Ballack's second-half shot into Iker Casillas' side-netting was the closest Germany came to a leveller.

His primary goal was to follow in the path of Berti Vogts, who steered Germany to the Euro 1996 crown, but Low feels that even in defeat reaching the final deserves praise.

And he had nothing but compliments for his players, as he set about helping them to qualify for the World Cup in two years' time.

"I have to compliment the team for what they have achieved over the past few weeks," said the 48-year-old.

"It has been fantastic. The players are obviously disappointed, but they have every reason to hold their heads up high."

  1. Germany should just forget about winning the worldcup. they got their chance in Euro 08 but blow it there is not going to be any compensation for them in 2010 as no one is going to hand them the cup. they have to beat all the other teams and I do not see that happening. they just haven't got it.2nd position is good and I agree with the coach they should hold their heads high as portugal didn't play the match yesterday even with Ronaldo in the team but Germany did with Lehman at the post its a good result if you ask me.

  8. Germany tried to take the lead in the first 15' of each time, but hard luck.Low tried to change the tactic as he did with Portugal and Turkey but he failed. The error of Lehman costed Germany too much as all the players had tried theis best even Lahm was better thwn alot of others. Second place is fair for a team who was up and down with his performance. Low has now to think and to try some new tactics if he wants to win in 2010
