Spain striker Fernando Torres described his side's Euro 2008 victory as a "dream come true".
Torres struck the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute at the Ernst Happel Stadion as Spain defeated three-time winners Germany.
The victory allowed Spain to lift their first piece of international silverware since the 1964 European Championship and Torres was delighted.
Spain recorded victories in all of their games in Austria and Switzerland and Liverpool forward Torres believes the correct team won this summer's finals.
"It's a dream come true," said Torres.
"At last justice has been done because the team that played the best football won the tournament.
"I feel a tremendous joy. It still hasn't sunk in what we've achieved.
"This is my first title and I hope it's the first of many. We are used to watching finals on television, but today we were here and we won.
"The team that has played the best football in the tournament has won the title and now we have a place in European football history."
And Torres believes Spain must now look to add the 2010 World Cup to their trophy cabinet as preparations begin for the tournament in South Africa in two years' time.
"It's our first title (together) and we hope it will be the first of many," added Torres. "We've still got the World Cup to come, we have to be ambitious."

Spain was good at the Euros perhaps the best team but success at the Euros does not mean automtic success at the world cup Torres have to know that. They played good football no doubt so will other teams at the wot
rld cup. So please enjoy your victory while it last who knows you might have to waut for another 44years before you get the next one.
well done Spain !!! Fernando Torres's comment that the team that played the best football won the competition is spot on Congratulations to Spain.
Ive never been a fan of German football for various reasons, cheats, unsportsman like, petulant when being beaten.Etc Etc, so I was glad last night to see that they plumbed a new depth in mediocrity, They were like an under 11 school football team (Girls) Total annhialation They got stuffed
From Rosey the jet
"The team that has played the best football in the tournament has won the title". From the mouth of Fernando Torres.
With youth on their side who would bet against them in the World Cup? For me, Senna was the best player in the competition. Solid in midfield. A ball winner and a great passer. Should have connected to score in the first half.
Congratulations to Spain.
