Lions 2009 - Welsh props ruled out

Eurosport - Mon, 29 Jun 10:50:00 2009

British and Irish Lions props Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones will miss the third Test against South Africa in Johannesburg due to injury.

Gethin Jenkins - Lions 2009 - 0

Jenkins (pictured) suffered a cracked cheekbone in the 28-25 second Test defeat to the Springboks and Jones dislocated his shoulder in an incident that led to lock Bakkies Botha being cited after the game.

Both props underwent surgery in Pretoria on Saturday night with five Lions players going to hospital after the game.

Brian O'Driscoll (concussion), Jamie Roberts (wrist) and Tommy Bowe (elbow) will all be monitored during the week before a decision is taken on their availability for the final Test.

Ronan O'Gara cannot open his left eye after suffering a deep cut, which required stitches, but should recover in time to feature in Johannesburg.

Winger Luke Fitzgerald had no lasting eye damage from the first-minute incident that led to a yellow card and subsequent citing for recalled Springbok flanker Schalk Burger.

"It certainly was a fairly brutal game," Lions doctor James Robson said.

"As the casualty list goes it is not something I am happy with. To lose two of our most colourful characters in Gethin and Adam is distressing. Gethin has had a plastic plate inserted. The timescale for his recovery is six to eight weeks.

"We couldn't get Adam's shoulder to pop back in at the stadium and he was required to go to theatre. He will be subject to further investigation and specialist opinion.

"Brian is very much alert and conscious today but he is subject to the usual return to play protocol."

Coach Ian McGeechan said he would not be calling up any further replacements for the final game and he still has four available props with Phil Vickery and Andy Sheridan as well as last week's call-ups John Hayes and Tim Payne.

  1. Hey boys cut it out. They are all Lions (all four emblems joined in the badge remember) The best team won both tests, tactics used were suspect, but, our boys were at it as well. Lets hope the third test is played in the spirit of the game and we get the benefit of a decent referee. That way Phil Vickery might get some protection against nasty front row tactics.

  2. Hey PW: and it wasn't a "bloody Welshman" who lost us the match (and the series) on Saturday. Remind me again: who was it who gave away that STUPID penalty in the last minute? And what nationality was he?

  3. leslie wouldnt be WELSH by any chance - he should take his blinkers off then he would see all 15 lions players not just the WELSH ones. who won THE GRAND SLAM , the HEINEKIN CUP , the MAGNERS LEAGUE, the CHURCHILL CUP ? ? - it wasnt a BLOODY WELSH TEA,M ! !

  4. I agree with Sergio SA deserved to win 2nd test, they certainly had more chances and had a few more penalty kicks gone over, it would have been no contest with twenty mins left.
Lions should have won first test (and with a different ref would have), The Beast proved what a very average scrummager he is when scummaging legally, but again The Lions had the chances but did not put them away.

Burger was an idiot, and should have a year ban minimum (how the coach believes it did not deserve a yellow card is sad, win at all costs)? Cheap shot from Botha again showed he is coward (psychological truma at having deformed face from birth)?

Lets look forward to next game and hope that both hemi spheres get together soon to iron out what the laws are and how they are refereed so that games are on a level playing field (so to speak).

  5. Well done to the Boks!!! a superb comeback to win against the lions... it was a hard fought battle and very entertaining game.. I really never thought we'd come back after the way we handled the first half, but the best team won in the end and shown once again the power of the Southern Hemisphere!! As a South African i would like to make known my disgust at the way S.Burger played and disgusted at his unprofessional behavior in the game. He should without doubt be banned from the game!! We dont need that sort of behavior in the game and we def dont need it in our glorious team! Well done to the lions, so close but yet so far! if we had ur kicker on our side the difference would be huge instead of winning by 3 points we could have won by 15 points!
Well done Boys! you have done ur country Proud! Bring on the next test!! South Africa all the way!

  6. Sheridan should go back to the garden. Some poor old granny is missing her gnome. What an arrogant and pompous player. As for phill(#81) that hasn't met any nice South Africans, you should get out of the house more and actually trying talking to one. Your myopian vision equals your ignorance.

  7. Lesley says in comment 75 "I have eyes and watched the game in minute detail". But in comment 78says "I saw a hand across his face not in his eye". Blind @#$% - that clip has been on just about every sports bulletin since the cheating thug did it, and even David Blunkett could see the finger in the eye.

  8. having watched the game again(still the same result) it's beyond me how botha was cited?, let alone given a 2 week ban?. if he was cited then why not the rest of the bok forwards??, why not every lions forward??, clearing out is clearing out & every forward in the game hit the ruck in the same way, just a huge shame on this occaision that jones was injured as he was having a great game.. as for burger??, well we all saw what happened & the powers that be must act. as for sheridan, he should be cited for his below the waist punch.. hats off to the boks & hats off to the lions. 2005 was a farce but the lions are back & i'm proud to be a lions fan
have to say, nice not to see that muppet sugrujames55 has nothing to say, it would be easy to blame his fellow countryman & munster boy but i have way too much respect to stoop that low, o'gara made 2 huge mistakes.. it happens but that's sport..

the lions are special, the boks know that, they won, we lost, the lions will come again & i'll look forward to australia as a lot of these lions will be back, but for now.. well done the boks, enjoy your victory & to every lions fan.. one more game, get behind the boys regardless of whose picked & it's been a pleasure to share thoughts with you all.. take it easy

  9. I am an ardent Bok supporter but what Burger did was unacceptable and an embarassment to South Africans. We don't need him in South African rugby and I hope he is banned for a very long time. I didn't see Botha's shoulder charge but it sounds like another stupid mistake on his part. As many readers have said, what about Sheridan? His below the belt punch was just as bad as well as several other niggling things. High tackles from the Lions were also unpunished.

  10. If this is what rugby is comming to then i give it 10years the skill of the Boks was nil at least the Lions played with skill not pick up shove and punch the best players the all blacks are now doing the same win at all cost no skill no new moves .I have watch all the games at least the lions tryed to play with skill not sunday pub game. But fair play to the boks they went out to win and they have set rugby back years the nutarls who watched the Lions tour will never go to a rugby match as it wes not rugby just a brawl I have played at a high level so I know what I am talking about since money came into the game the skill went out win at all cost .The players like Burger, Botha Sheridan should go and see the x players who are in wheelchairs or who are disabled through thuggery like there . It a mans game and it should be played with skill and pride For you Boks fans go and ask Your hero Burger how he would like to spend the rest of his life with one eye or blind he is a disgrace to rugby and should be banned for life this is not the first time he done it he just did not get cought I know of three players who he has blinded. You Boks fans need to grow up and dont be so blinded to the thuggery that you acceped as Rugby

  11. The Lions pulled off a big heist by saying the Boks are dirty players when in fact ... spear tackle anybody and Sheridan, O'Driscoll,O'Gara's charge etc.etc.etc.

  13. Sheridan and Schalk cant be compared as Sheridan is clever, he hid his punches from the ref. In the long shot he punches Bakkies all out, his fist starts past his shoulder. From then on he is after Bakkies at every opportunity, hence the pushes he gets back. He also neatly punches a substitute between the legs, talk about a low blow. Kids are usually taught that isnt acceptable in society. The worst is that he looks so innocent afterwards, butter wouldnt melt in his mouth.

  14. GreggB (82) Yes he is very excitable and always in trouble but he isnt malicious, I merely think that O Driscoll has the benefit of everyone's doubt. He isnt an angel either!

  15. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

The ref was way too weak for that game. They should let Botha play in the last test. I'd love to see Sheridan give him one where he deserves it. as for cowardly burger, look forward to seeing him get what he deserves too. It will take a Bok to get blinded before we hear anything unbiased from their fans. It aint the Lions fault you aint in charge anymore. Deal with it and try and co exist not only with the people who should be in your country but also with the rest of the planet. I've still never met a nice South African....

  16. Lesley (Remark No. 80) One just has to go to google to see how often Burger has been cited for eye-gouging, high tackles etc but also to see how many times he has received bannings by citing commissions as a result of these citings

  18. All this childish whining is spoiling what I thought was a brilliant game. Stephen Jones was unshakable in his kicks. Mike Phillips and Jamie Roberts were in their usual great form. the Boks would have had another try if it hadnt been for Shane Williams's fantastic tackle stopping them. Adam Jones was great in the scrum he and Gethan Jenkins will be sorely missed in the last test! If Pienaar had been on form the score board would have very different. The boks couldnt get their game together in the first half and BIL took full advantage. I think all the squad needs is some more welsh players and maybe the Boks wouldnt have won if James Hook had been on the bench! All power to both teams. Sportsmanship folks. Lets face it if the goughing had been delibrate Luke would not have been able to play on, I saw a hand across his face not in his eye. Skalk is a good player but excitable. Benefit of the doubt? Has he ever played a full game in his life without going into the sin bin? I think this week he set a world record. Lets try and remember what sportsmanship is all about.

  19. john b-what i wanted to know is what is the law not opinion a blogger posted on another thread that if the referee did not see the offense then it would be automatically a yellow . as to schalk burger you need only LOOK at his career on and off the field and having met him personally know that it was only a moment of madness (im not condoning the act) he will not forgive himself for it i can guarantee it . going on to bakkies botha i think that the reason he was cited was due to the injury caused , i have seen a million clean outs jones was unfortunate to have his arm outstretched , to the comment about credentials the same 'accredited' people are being roasted for poor decisions . you have the minutes of the match please go look , unlike alot of people i have given you evidence to go look at if you dont agree by all means tell me why . the only thing that BIL supporters are doing on this site is tarnishing the BIL reputation even geech has praised not only his players but the springboks as well . the only player that was hard done was fitzgerald and he played to the end , so your post has no real merit . sorry man . once again well played BIL to those guys who wont tour again i feel for you as i know how long 12 years can be .

From Shane, on Sun 28 Jun 11:57PM
  20. I see all of you are already talking about how you are going to beat the Mighty Boks come November, but the BIL couldn't even do that... I enjoy 6 nations rugby as well and my fav team is Ireland, but be realistic now... Ireland is good... the best in the Northern hemisphere, but that is it... The BOks are the best in the WORLD... Hence, world champs.

Come November and we will show you little whinners up here in the North how to play decent clean rugby. Bokke to show you a thing or 2....

And to all the many BIL supporters going on about Schalk Burger and the rest.... Remember, he gave you guys 10 points... No gouging... no contest.... The Boks would have destroyed you all the way to the final whistle... Count your blessings...

    BOKKE BEST EVER...!!
