Premier League - City make huge Eto'o offer

Eurosport - Mon, 29 Jun 06:51:00 2009

Samuel Eto'o could be on his way to Manchester City after Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed the Premier League club had made the striker a "stratospheric offer".

Speculation has been rife about where Eto'o will be next season as, with his contract set to expire next summer, Barca were keen to either tie him to a new deal or cash in on the Cameroon striker.

Reports suggest the Catalan giants have accepted a 30 million euro bid from City and Laporta believes the temptation of a mega salary would prove too much for Eto'o.

"Eto'o has a stratospheric offer from City, which would convert him into the best paid player in the world," he told Catalan radio station iCat FM. "It's starting to become clear that he has this monster offer. He wants to stay but an offer like this is very difficult to refuse. If Eto'o accepts this stratospheric offer we will have to bring in someone."

Eto'o contributed 36 goals last season as Barca claimed an unprecedented Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble.

Should the 28-year-old leave the Nou Camp, Barca would likely step up their efforts to land Spain and Valencia striker David Villa.

  6. well, impressive record for Barca not doubt but with that impressive record we must also say he's got some of the most impressive attacking players behind him pulling the strings.......'ll City have enough to pull the strings for him???? city's midfield aint the xavis and iniestas.

  7. Great, Spain lost once and everybody now call them over-rated. I bet that's what happened when Barca lost to Espanyol in the middle of the season, then at the end everyone call them the best again. What a bunch of jokers.

I don't see why people are so unhappy about all the money around football. First of all, the money is not theirs. Second, big money transfers make football more interesting isn't it? Finally, good for Barca to get so much money!!!

  8. As a Man Utd supporter I say City should go and buy whoever they wish, if they have the money let them spend it, I think its better for the premier league if there are teams that can attract some the big name stars Like Eto'o. We need to have a more competitive league in my opinion, it really doesn't help when the top 4 are only playing amongst themselves for the title. This coming season will be the true test for City, they can finally flex their financial muscle and spend big. So lets just wait and see how they spend their money and whether or not it will be used to good effect.

  9. am a football fanatic but i must say am losing interest in football why, we footie fans want to see football being played men,(like the USA performance against Spain) not by some overrated pri madonnas no. ronaldo costing 80m what would the maradonas and peles cost now. robinho being the most expensive player in the premiership and put his performance in the con'fed cup into context.what a joke

  10. this is pure stupidity, football is becoming a joke well, made by the europeans if all these pplayers cost that much money, how much 'll zidane...figo and co cost now.....lets face is ronaldo is no better than zidane you just cant compare the two and we overrated spain humbled by a US team who wouldnt make the spanish bench.

  11. Eto's contract running out is it!!! Agent claiming massive offer in for him is he!!! What a suprise.... how predictable and boring. There is of course no offer at all from City... it's just contract negotiating mind games stuff as usual.

  14. I reckon little man Tevez will be wondering where he will fit into the City plans??? E'to, Sant Cruz, Robinho etc; sounds to me as though CT will once again spend most of his footbal coming of the sub's bench with a club that will still not break into the top 4.................

  15. Well I hope Eto'o does sign, just because I like to see talented footballers playing in the Premier League.

As for people who say City have too many strikers, the way I see it they have Bellamy (who will probably be sold), Santa Cruz, Tevez & Eto'o. I count Robinho as a midfielder who will most likely play on the wing, so they will have 3 strikers (ignoring all their second rate forwards who will probably be sold), and that is a nice number to allow flexibility in formations (eg 4-3-3) or to allow for a bit of squad rotation.

  20. spaz, you're right. City have the money, why can't they spend. If MU had Ronaldo,Rooney,Tevez & Berbatov why can't City have Bellamy,Cruz,Robinho,Tevez & Etoo. Still both Tevez & Etoo have not signed yet. If both do signed I think Bellamy could be sold. So that left 4 strikers which is same as what MU had last season. I think UTD fans are just running scared coz they've lost their best player and seem unable to replace him. Eventhough they got a lot of money from it.
