Arsenal are rumoured to be preparing a bid for Lyon striker Karim Benzema in an audacious move that could see the London club poach him from under arch rivals Manchester United's nose.

A reported £30 million has been set aside to procure the services of the 21-year-old Frenchman.

However the deal relies heavily on Wenger agreeing to sell Emmanuel Adebayor to Italian heavyweights Milan, something which would further shake up the transfer market.

The Gunners also have to contend with Real madrid, who have reportedly already made a 32m euro bid for Benzema.

The news has sparked debate among Eurosport message board users with some of the comments shown below.

Leaw - "I think it would be a great deal .Benzema would be the perfect man to replace Adebayor, and I think he would do just great with Arsenal."

  1. He can be a big hit at Arsenal, being at Real he has­ every possibility to be overshadowed by Ronaldo or­ Kaka. At Arsenal he can reach heights as done by­ previous gunners. Henry, Pires, Viera, Bergkamp. He can­ become a superstar at the emirates.

  6. One of the most over rated players there is at the­ moment. He may do well in Ligue 1, but on the big stage­ he is yet to convince me that he is true 'star'­ quality.
    He looked pretty ordinary on the big stage at­ the Euros, though one bad tournament is­ forgiveable.
    Wenger though, would probably change all­ of that, as he has with so many other players.

    Real or­ Arsenal, don't see him going to Man Utd.

I think too many people either play too many computer­ games or believe media hype, the french league is sub­ standard at best, 5 years ago Cisse was the next mega­ star...look at him now rejected by Sunderland and­ playing in Greece and Elmander had a very good record­ in France yet only scored a handfull for Bolton last­ season....for me you have to have cut it in one of the­ big 2 to justify big prices ie//the premier league or­ the spanish league.If a team could get Benzema for say­ £15mill with a further £15mill in achievement add ons­ then fine but £30-£35mill up front for a player who­ didn't even finish top scorer last season in the­ french league is too big a gamble for me.

  9. Doubt that benzema will opt for arsenal. His biggest­ goal is to win the champions league and he'l­ probably join real to give himself what he believes is­ a best shot at it.
    Although most of us wish that real­ madrid fail to win anything next year, we have to come­ to terms that they are building an extremely talented­ team. lets hope mr.perez inability to realise the weak­ link is the defence will be their downfall.

  10. Yeah right! as if Wenger will double his record­ transfer fee, he would never spend that much in one go,­ he will probably buy and average striker like Dzeko for­ 15mill. I mean who has ever heard of this centre back­ they just bought? If they want to become a major­ European force they need to spend huge money on proven­ names in centre mid and centre defence, but wenger is­ too cautious in the transfer market so this will never­ happen, whilst Chelsea and Utd get stronger and­ stronger all the time, I wouldnt be surprised to see­ them finish 5th next season, but hey you never know,­ Liverpool were meant to be @#$% last season but they­ still came near to winning it.
