Arsenal are rumoured to be preparing a bid for Lyon striker Karim Benzema in an audacious move that could see the London club poach him from under arch rivals Manchester United's nose.

A reported £30 million has been set aside to procure the services of the 21-year-old Frenchman.

However the deal relies heavily on Wenger agreeing to sell Emmanuel Adebayor to Italian heavyweights Milan, something which would further shake up the transfer market.

The Gunners also have to contend with Real madrid, who have reportedly already made a 32m euro bid for Benzema.

The news has sparked debate among Eurosport message board users with some of the comments shown below.

  17. He's a great player and probably worth the 30m, but­ Wenger could buy 2-4 even younger players for this­ money. I dont know if we should use that much money on­ one player, but I've always trusted Wenger and i­ think he will do the right choice. If i had to choose i­ would buy 2-4 younger players for the future even if we­ already have a young squad. What i find strange is that­ everybody think Arsenal dont have the money. Well they­ used alot on the Emirates Stadium, but the ticket money­ over the past few years have already payed for the used­ money and i think we are ready to buy the best players­ even if producing players are much cheaper better and­ safer.
