Wimbledon - Wimbledon Power Rankings

Eurosport - Mon, 29 Jun 07:14:00 2009

Sunday's rest day gives us the chance to take another look at who's looking good for the men's and women's crowns at the All England Club next weekend.

TENNIS Andy Murray Wimbledon - 0

Few would have expected Lleyton Hewitt, Ivo Karlovic and Tomas Berdych to be featuring highly on the men's side, likewise with Sabine Lisicki among the ladies.

But a series of upsets has opened up some parts of the draw, and several of the underdogs have a good shot at a run to the semis.

However, the presence of Roger Federer and Andy Murray, and the Williams sisters, still looms very large.

MEN

1. (1) Roger Federer - in control and on course to reclaim his crown

2. (2) Andy Murray - another straight sets win for the home hero

3. (3) Andy Roddick - came through a tough fight

4. (4) Novak Djokovic - has looked solid but bigger tests await

5. (NR) Lleyton Hewitt - former champ is fighting like his life depends on it

6. (NR) Ivo Karlovic - no one wants to face the huge serving Croat

7. (NR) Tomas Berdych - finally looks ready to fulfill his Slam potential

8. (7) Tommy Haas - survived a two-day epic to reach round four

WOMEN

1. (1) Venus Williams - can she make it three in a row?

2. (2) Serena Williams - has been totally in control so far

3. (7) Victoria Azarenka - desperate for her first Major

4. (6) Caroline Wozniacki - thoroughly comfortable on the London lawns

5. (5) Dinara Safina - far from convincing and struggling with serve

6. (NR) Amelie Mauresmo - former champ is rediscovering her old form

7. (NR) Sabine Lisicki - new star has the game to go deep

8. (NR) Elena Dementieva - making solid progress and gaining confidence

(pre-tournament ranking in brackets)

  1. Andy, just as 2 keep playing the way he has, dont change a thing, and roddick will fall by the wayside,Then its on 2 the final and probably Federer, who is not the player he use to be,he will retire a beaten finalist

Hey you can lose the 'w' too!
I know what you mean about Dinara, but her head will be fine today; it's merely a last 16 game - the real jitters don't come 'til later!!!!!

  3. I still believe on the power of Federer. For sure he will outclash Murray on the Final granting if the later will reach on that stage. On the women side, i still favor the All-Williams fight. They still both have the power. The young teenagers are also promising. In short, this wimbledon is really interesting to watch.

  4. I am not convinced that Nadal will ever be back and the force of before! As for Roger - he is not ready to retire! Sampras was the same had a bad year 1996 and then went on to win again and again!
Having watched Murray live on Saturday - I think he does indeed stand a chance of getting to the final but not sure he will win it if Roger is on the other side! I think that Roger will lift the title for the 6th time!
As for the women - Would love to see Mauresmo win again - anything but an all Williams final! They are boring and uncompetitve!! The title needs to go to someone different!

  5. surely murray has the best chance this year,as nadal is not there.now we all no if he was there it would be a different story.Federer has had his day,he should now retire,as is day is gone

  6. and now on monday the competition really starts, in the top half of the draw berdych and simon are the ones to watch outside the obvious of roddick murray and hewitt, there could be a few upsets starting as of soon, sorry but wawrinka and ferrero dont figure in my list of favourites, in the second half it looks like it is plain sailing for fed, can sod, haas or a big powerfull ivo upset him on the way i doubt it but who knows. i think fed s test will come in the final.

Ok, We all already know that Andy Murray looks like a freaking reptile, but I don't understand why you at Eurosport need to prove that fact every single day putting this ugly picture.

  15. i recall there was a nigerian tennis player in the eighties who was good enough to play in slams, SW19 included. i remember him because i used to think how patronising people were when they kept referring to the fact that he used to be a ball boy, same thing that was said about arthur ashe a decade earlier until he won wimbledon and became a unesco ambassador. even the armitraj brothers used to be known as former ball boys until vijay appeared in a james bond film, the list goes on as we internationalists who championed the cause of the underdogs remember very well.
