Norwich manager Glenn Roeder has confirmed Gary Doherty will be ruled out for three months after an exploratory ankle operation.The central defender suffered the damage in a friendly against Ahlafors IF last week, leaving Roeder in the search for some defensive cover before the start of the season.

He said: "It is bad news. The scan revealed more serious damage than we thought and he had an operation to clean up the mess that is in his ankle. He will not play football for three months.

"That brings us down to three centre-backs and I want four. I'm working on bringing one in before the (transfer) window closes."
