Kenyon tells chasing pack to catch up

Tue 29 Jul, 07:30 AM

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon insists clubs outside the Premier League's big four must "get their houses in order" for them to compete. The Blues, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have filled the competition's top four places in each of the past three seasons.

Ideas to try to level the playing field, including placing a limit on the number of foreign players, have been mooted in some quarters but Kenyon does not back such proposals.

Kenyon said: "Other teams in England should be knocking on our door; teams like Tottenham, Newcastle, Villa, Everton.

"It's more about them getting their houses in order rather than us coming down to their level.

"If you look across Europe, other major leagues are dominated by one, two or three teams, so it's too easy to say this is a Premier League issue.

"What's important is the way we distribute our TV revenues, which is very equitable."

Kenyon has also reiterated the club's willingness to discuss the league's controversial proposal for all sides to play a 39th match at a foreign venue.

The idea met with much opposition when first aired last season but it will again be discussed at the next shareholder meeting in September.

Kenyon said: "We are supportive of evaluating the proposal. We have to recognise it's probably the global league in football. We have to be open-minded."

  4. haha, Kenyon.. funny guy :p
Rightly said, Keith K, Chelsea would themselves be nowhere near were they are now without £££$$$ Abramovic $$$£££. So what are you saying Kenyon? That all other PL teams must each find themselves a rich russian dude so they can get to where Chelsea are? :o :D hahaha :D
funny, reaaaal funny :D It's like someone riding a bike with an engine, asking another guy pedaling on his bicycle to keep up *-) Ludacris !
I myself, a Liverpool fan (diehard), have huge respect for Manchester United & Fergie, and Arsenal & Arsène (and I hope that one day we'll be talking about Liverpool & Rafa), but i find it extremely difficult to have respect for Chelski, with all due respect to their supporters. I mean common..

  5. I am a gooner who is out of tuch with the LFC faithful so it is to you I direct this question: With the Amount of cash Benitez is spending do you think he could avoid the sack if Liverpool go trophy less this season?

  8. to zehst- how can you say arsenal were nothing before wenger? man who where nothing before fergie! take away wenger and fergie and do the math and i believe you will find arsenal have more trophies fool! and as for liverpool they're a team of the past and the most consistent team, in regards to winning without 20+ year gaps, is arsenal winning something major every decade.

  9. Harry St. George - i'm sorry mate but you are in dream land if you think investors would be queuing up to buy Chelsea when Abramovitch leaves, the fact of the matter is that you are still operating at a massive loss and at the moment you can get away with it because Abramovitch will just throw more money into the club but they are very few people with his sort of money who would happily start pissing it all down the drain with no guarantee of making any profit!

  10. Lets be honest there isnt a Big Four its a BIG TWO. Manchester and Liverpool are the only BIg Clubs in England. Chelski until 5 years ago were nothing, a little dabble in UEFA CUP/FA Cup but nothing special except for Zola, Arsenal aswell except for genius Arsene Wenger who change that club. When u look at Chelsea players there arent any "Genius" players, maybe Deco but thats only recent aquisition. Tottenham will now be nowhere near the big two cause they sold maybe the best strike PARTNERSHIP in the EPL. Everton can get close but only with Moutinho and Arteta running the show. Newcastle sorry to say will do as bad as last year, Shearer needed to take the manager but without him no show. Villa will get to UEFA CUP final and because of International injuries, Capello will use a Villa team to represent England. Man U/ Liverpool / Arsenal / Chelsea / Everton / Villa those are top 6 next season

  11. As a Chelsea supporter even I think Kenyon is a @#$% but that doesn't excuse idiots continually talking rubbish about Chelsea. Chelsea have provided the challenge to Man Utd and Arsenal that the Prem. needed. Funny how little was said about the previous domination of these two teams even though they were always able to buy up the best players. As for Abramovitch leaving, if that happens, Chelsea are now established in the world as a big team (whether Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool like it or not) and rich investors would be queuing up to take his place. Rich benefactors are now 2-a penny (e.g. at Man City) and if they provide more competition in the Prem., I'm all for it. I'd like all Prem. teams to have one !

From Harry St. George, on Tue 29 Jul 9:19AM
  12. As usual when people hear the truth or something that they consider to be true but are too narrow minded to look at the bigger picture they react in an aggresive manner as some of the responses above prove
Like it or not, Mr Kenyan is right; the teams closest to the top 4 do need to improve; they need more investment, better marketing, increase the fan base; improve the image of the company, set goals and ambitions that are realistic, make the biggest players in the world want to play for them. I am sure that the four clubs he mentioned would also agree that they should be knocking on the doors of the top four!
Peter Kenyan is not a stupid man, he is very good at his job, his track record speaks for itself.
By the way, in case you think i am a Chelsea fan, you are wrong, i support Mr Kenyans previous employers

  13. Its amazing what someone will say when they have a rich benefactor - you'd think that Chelsea had been the top team in England for the last 20 yrs when you listen to him or read his statements... Who do Chelsea think they are? This is why people now hate Chelsea more than ManU... a few years ago they were bankrupt and going out of business, then some rich "businessman" puts his hand in pocket, they win a couple of things, buy up what they consider to be the "best" players and now they think they are gods gift to sport.... get real Kenyon.... you're a jumped up "little" man... a standing joke..but the best thing is, you cant see that...

From Keith, on Tue 29 Jul 8:39AM
  14. Always thought you were a w**k** and now youve just proved it!! When your rusky friend withdraws his dosh (have you noticed he's missing more and more games?) and you return to your usual mid table position i hope you remember this statement!

    From D, on Tue 29 Jul 8:21AM
  15. Mr Kenyon are you stupid to say such, remember you have a RICH owner and this makes life very easy to cope in the Prem League, perhaps if you had to sell to buy or make a profit you
    would keep your mouth closed.

From STANLEY, on Tue 29 Jul 8:21AM
  16. Oh Mr Kenyon, how arrogant are you? Perhaps if and when Chelsea have to operate in the real world, i.e make a profit, you may be able to say such things, in the meantime, I suggest you keep under cover, just in case your bubble bursts.
