Robins pull plug on Mifsud deal

Tue 29 Jul, 08:15 PM

Bristol City have pulled out of a deal to sign Coventry's Michael Mifsud after Gary Johnson said he had concerns about the player's commitment.City agreed a fee of £1.5million for the Malta striker last week and he looked certain to move to Ashton Gate until Johnson had a change of heart after meeting the transfer-listed Sky Blues frontman.

Johnson told the club's official website: "I don't think he's right for us. I know people will be shocked by that and this is not me trying to enhance my reputation for interview techniques.

"I can't commit £1.5million of the club's money to people that I don't think can be committed to the club over three years.

"That means so much to me and this football club. We've worked so hard over the last few years getting where we are with the dressing room we have.

"When I talk to people and try to do a deal with them you get to know their weaknesses. Although they might be very good players, in the end if they aren't the right personality for me and the club they'll let you down in the end."

On Monday, chairman Steve Lansdown revealed a club-record deal for Egypt striker Emad Meteb had been called off after he turned out for former club Al Ahly without permission.

  1. Bristol City lost the plot!! Micheal is the most commited & prolific player Malta have ever had. I should know being half Maltese & been to Malta home matches when they have been hammered. Micheal would of been commited & would of given 110%, Micheal will Iam sure me given a chance to show what he can do in the Premiership.

  3. Gary Johnson is right to make this decision. He has the best interests of the club at heart and knows how to get the best from his players.

From the interviews I have seen, he is a very gracious man and a credit to himself.

Bristol City fans must have faith in this man.
