Sidwell 'gutted' at Royals' drop

Tue 29 Jul, 03:45 PM

Former Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell claims he was gutted to see his former club suffer relegation from the Premier League last season.Sidwell left The Royals 12 months ago to join Chelsea but has remained in touch with many of the club's players.

The 25-year-old returns to the Madejski Stadium this weekend with his new club Aston Villa, and he told Reading's official matchday programme that he had sympathy for the Royals' plight.

"I was gutted to be honest," said Sidwell.

"I'm still in contact with a lot of the lads and considering the players they have in the squad and the way the club is run, they deserve top-flight football.

"Now the players have got to show a big enough character to come back up. They need to get a positive mentality back, so they have to start the season well."
