Broad Back On County Duty

Tue 29 Jul, 04:09 PM

Nottinghamshire have confirmed Stuart Broad will face Durham in Wednesday's crucial LV County Championship Division One clash - raising the intriguing prospect of three England discards facing off at Trent Bridge.

Broad, who is not in England's starting XI, will link up with team-mate Darren Pattinson - himself left out of the squad after his controversial selection for the second Test - for the first-versus-third encounter, while Steve Harmison should play for the visitors.

The 29-year-old paceman was handed a recall to England's 13-man party after seven Tests in the cold following his dropping in New Zealand, but has been overlooked, with England opting to go for a four-man attack.

Andre Adams will start the game in Broad's place as he must stay with Michael Vaughan's men as cover until the start of play.

All three bowlers will be hoping to steal the limelight in the match, while it will be interesting to see what kind of workload Broad is forced to endure given that his omission from the third Test has been presented as a chance to rest the 22-year-old and prevent burn-out.

Frantic travel between Edgbaston and Trent Bridge, followed by participation in a keenly-contested top-of-the-table clash scarcely seems like the best way of achieving that, but Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell is nevertheless looking forward to having the seamer back.

"Stuart will definitely play for us provided England don't suffer any injuries and we've nominated Andre as cover until he arrives," said Newell.

"Stuart's future in the England team is beyond doubt and it won't do him any harm to have some time with us.

"He has become a big player for England but they have chosen to include who they consider to be their four best bowlers at this moment in time.

"It will make for an interesting domestic fixture with some quality bowlers on show."
