Roy Keane wants Marton Fulop to agree on a move to Stoke in the next 24 hours or return to Sunderland.
Stoke have settled on a fee in the region of £3million with Sunderland for Fulop, but have yet to agree personal terms.
Fulop is looking to play regular first-team football in the coming season and said last week he was "positive" about the prospect of a move to the Britannia Stadium.
However, Sunderland boss Keane now wants the Hungarian goalkeeper to come to a decision on whether he will join the Premier League new-boys.
"Marton is struggling to agree personal terms," Keane told the Sunderland Echo.
"If that isn't sorted out within 24 hours, then he is still a Sunderland player and I will expect him back in training.
"It's up to Marton to get the best deal he can, but if he can't then he will be back here and I will welcome him back because he's got a chance of being a top goalkeeper.
"We've agreed a price with Stoke. These people come to see me and say they want to play first-team football, but then they get an opportunity and ...
"Money has a big say with the modern footballer."
