Wigan have confirmed that Maynor Figueroa is set to stay at the club for a further six months.

Should the Latics continue to be interested in the Honduras international they will then have the option to make the move permanent.

The full-back initially arrived at JJB Stadium from Deportivo Olimpia in January, impressing during his only first-team start to date, against Manchester United on the final day of last season.

The game versus the Premier League champions represented only his second appearance in English football, following a substitute showing against Birmingham, but Steve Bruce saw enough to persuade him that the 25-year-old has the potential to be a success.

The announcement that he will remain with the Latics for the first half of the 2008/09 campaign has been delayed by work permit and visa issues, but Bruce is delighted to have retained the services of the defender.

"It has been another complicated one, we don't seem to pick easy ones at this club. But it's all been resolved satisfactorily," Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post.

"Maynor waited for his chance and did very well when it came last season. He has the potential to do well in England, he has a fantastic attitude in training and he has shown now that he is not fazed by the Premier League.

"I'm delighted he's with us for another few months at least, and hopefully longer."

Figueroa added: "I am very happy to stay. I want to make a career in England, which is why I have tried so hard when I am here.

"This is the best league in the world and I'm grateful that Wigan have given me the chance to prove myself. Now I want to repay that faith by performing for the team."
