POSITIVES: When Gary Megson was appointed manager following the sacking of Sammy Lee, he was not greeted positively by Trotters fans to say the least. However, he has managed to win the doubters over, assembling a decent group of players whilst gaining a respectable 13th position last season, despite the loss of captain Kevin Nolan to Newcastle United. Their back line has been strengthened with the arrivals of Zat Knight, Sam Ricketts and Paul Robinson, giving the squad some much-needed depth.

NEGATIVES: They lost far too many games last season, more even than the relegated Newcastle. With 41 points gained during the last campaign it was enough to keep them up, but left Bolton fans were biting their fingernails for quite a while.

VERDICT: Bolton have added quality to their squad which should see them compete this season. Gary Megson will always have his critics but so far he has silenced them well. 13th.
