Premier League - Round-up: Burnley escape

Eurosport - Wed, 29 Jul 08:33:00 2009

Two late goals saved Burnley from a morale-sapping defeat at Accrington Stanley as they continued their preparations for their Premier League debut next month.

2008-2009 Championship Burnley Robbie Blake - 0

Goals from John Miles and Sean McConville had the hosts ahead with just seven minutes left, but Robbie Blake (pictured) pulled one back for the Clarets after 83 minutes before Owen Coyle's men levelled late on through Steven Thompson.

Sam Ricketts made an immediate impact on his Bolton debut as Gary Megson's side ran out 2-1 winners over Dutch second division outfit Den Bosch.

Ricketts joined Bolton from Hull at the weekend and needed just 28 minutes to open his account in a Wanderers shirt, the defender heading home from fellow new boy Sean Davis's inch-perfect cross.

Megson, who also handed a debut to former Aston Villa defender Zat Knight, saw his side go further ahead after 57 minutes when captain Kevin Davies tapped home from close range after good work by Matt Taylor.

Den Bosch pulled a goal back with a deflected effort off Gavin McCann 10 minutes from time, which looped over substitute goalkeeper Adam Bogdan.

Wigan's preparations for the new Premier League season continued with a thumping 4-1 victory against Championship side Preston at Deepdale.

Goals from Hugo Rodallega and Charles N'Zogbia had the Latics in the driving seat at the interval while a third from Michael Brown and a debut strike by Jason Scotland sealed an emphatic win for Roberto Martinez's side in the second half.

Neil Mellor pulled one back for the hosts in the dying minutes.

Argentine starlet Gerardo Bruna scored the only goal as a young Liverpool XI beat Cambridge United.

Bruna, who formerly played for Real Madrid, curled in a free-kick after appearing from the bench on the hour-mark.

A youthful Manchester United XI beat County Antrim 3-0 in the opening match of the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.

Irish winger Robbie Brady scored twice in the first half and William Keane added a third after half-time, although United's Ravel Morrison was sent off.

  3. Get a grip everyone, Burnley had just got off a flight back from LA and were playing Stanley to help the Accies cashflow problems. Anyone ever tried playing 90 mins with jet-lag?

That said the Clarets will do excpetionally well to stay up this season, our home form might save us combined with the poor sides at Portsmouth, Hull and Birmingham.

  6. i think burnley will have no problems staying up. they have some quality players in elliott, paterson and fletcher. teams like pompey, hull, and stoke will be relegation candidates, lets not forget that burnley defeated most london clubs last year in the cup.
