Beijing 2008 - UEFA boss in Team GB warning

Eurosport - Fri, 29 Aug 11:50:00 2008

UEFA general secretary David Taylor has warned an Olympic Great Britain team could see Scotland "disappear off the international stage".

FOOTBALL - David Taylor, UEFA general secretary - 0

Calls are growing for the Home Nations to come together to field a British side in the London 2012 Games.

Yet there remains much opposition and Taylor, a former chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, fears Scotland could lose their footballing independence as a result.

"It is the quickest way for Scotland to disappear off the international stage," he told the BBC.

"It is about the identity of the countries and it is a matter for the football associations.

"But, when I was in Scotland and chief executive of the Scottish FA, we had a clear and firm position and I understand that is still the position - that Scotland should not take part in an Olympic GB team."

Taylor is wary of assurances from world governing body FIFA that Scotland's identity would not be compromised.

"FIFA is comprised 208 countries and we have had situations in the past when the privileges of the British associations, one of which is to compete separately in international football tournaments, has come under attack," he said.

"What I would say is that we should be very careful about that as it's difficult to see what guarantees can be given."

  1. Look before you talk? If you read before you wrote you'd know that you're only allowed to take three players that are over 23 to an Olympic games and all of the players you're talking about from Scotland will be too old to qualify for the main squad in four years time. If we take only three senior squad members to represent Britain it'll be players like Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole that are thought of before Darren Fletcher is. They won't get picked; that's a fact, take a deep breath and get over it. Some Scotish players might play, in what is a meaningless competition constrained by FIFA regulation so it doesn't upstage the World Cup, but they are at school at the moment and you haven't heard their names yet. 3. What about a "one of" tournament between all four sides and winner represents UK, then no arguments about who is/no in team.

  4. Based on Englands performances and achivements non of our players deserve to play in the pub league premiership is only good because of forigen imports. so lets face the truth British international football third world Cr*p. 46 years and could not win an egg cup

  5. It's partly the fans' fault that the players get paid so much; if they started refusing to go to games or to buy £40 replica shirts by the million then the money wouldn't be there to lure the best players from club to club. That's how business works. The fact is "pro-football" is not boring to watch, which is why the Premiership's television rights sell for billions of pounds. The World Cup is a stage for the best players in the world and is a rival to the Olympics as an event, whereas Olympic football clearly doesn't showcase the best footballers in the world, which compromises the "spirit" of the event. The Scottish players won't get a look in and, to be fair, the Welsh and Northern Irish won't be making up the bulk of the team. The Scottish identity won't be compromised anymore than the Bedfordshire identity is when Andy Johnson isn't picked for England; even if they aren't picked it's only being taken seriously for five minutes because it's being played at home. Olympic football doesn't showcase the best, so the golds are worthless.

  6. Keep saying the same thing. No Scot would get into the team anyway so what the heck.

  7. Stezv?? kenny miller?? get in the england squad - what a joke, he can only score in the scottish premier league - just like Samaras. fletcher is ok, but he is no where near the level of Stevie G, Lamps, hargreaves or barry.
Scotland dont want to join up to this for one reason - they know full well that none of their players will make it into the team. not even barry ferguson, who is supposidly their best player, but was an avergae at best premiership player!

  8. Premiership and Scottish Football is not a sport anyway...its a circus for rich @#$% and dumbass primadonnas....the Olympics are more about the spirit of competition, pro-"football" is about nothing but money - and it's @#$% to watch.
Olympic football teams, if following a spirit of competition should be chosen from lower leagues or amateurs....at least then we can have an occasional laugh at a fat evil defender, or a dimwit who can't hit a barn door with a basketball, or a goalie with teflon gloves.
GB doesn't deserve an Olympic football team - bickering politics have already proved that.

    DEATH TO FOOTBALL!

  11. Based on some recent performances I cant think of many English players who deserve their place either. Perhaps we could do a 5-a-side round robin and be done with it...

  12. Screw Scotland and their crappy boring football...whenever England plays, sales of the other teams shirts go through the roof in Scotland. My cousin got beaten up in Scotland for wearing an England shirt and I seem to remember a disbled man getting dragged of his car and getting @#$%ted for the same reason. I hope Scottish football dissapears and none of their teams make it to a major competition again.

From Lynx, on Fri 29 Aug 8:33AM
  13. Well, Peter, I'd think Kenny Miller and Darren Fletcher would make it :P

If it's only for the Olympics comming up then it's nothing much to bicker about. What really concerns me who they'd pick.

From Stevz!, on Fri 29 Aug 8:21AM
  14. Sigh, another Scot who simply does not understand the way things work when it comes to the Olympics. The only reason he is saying this now is so it doesn't make him look like a pillock for having said it when he was involved at the SFA. It's an olympic thing only for crying out loud and has nothing to do with any competitions outside of that.

and no, I'm not English so not biased....though I can't think of a single Scottish player who would make it into a GB team ;)
