The Airwaves Ducati rider had started the race knowing a top-nine finish would be enough to take him to the crown for the second time in five years.

He was running eighth after two laps but with four riders, including his nearest rival Leon Haslam, tumbling in two incidents, he was up to third place on the fifth lap.

Byrne took a comfortable third and the title as the race was won by his team-mate Leon Camier ahead of HM Plant Honda rider Cal Crutchlow.

Haslam, eager to set the record straight after his earlier demise, set a furious pace at the head of the pack in the second race, romping to his fifth win in seven races by some four seconds.
