Ferrari review pit-stop system

Eurosport - Mon, 29 Sep 16:17:00 2008

Ferrari will review their electronic pit-stop light system after human error cost Felipe Massa victory in the Singapore Grand Prix and dealt a severe blow to the Brazilian's championship hopes.

FORMULA 1 2008 Singapore GP Ferrari Massa Panne - 0

Massa, who started on pole, went from first to last after the blunder. He finished 13th and out of the points.

Team boss Stefano Domenicali explained after the race that a Ferrari mechanic had erroneously given title contender Massa the green light while the refuelling hose was still attached to the car.

The overhead light signals are normally connected to the release handle on the fuel nozzle, indicating to the driver that he can leave when the hose is uncoupled.

However, with cars swarming into the pit lane while the safety car was deployed, Ferrari switched their light system to manual operation and the mechanic's error meant the green 'go' signal flashed up prematurely.

"We were not using the electronic system, it was run manually," Domenicali told the Ferrari website. "When there are a lot of cars coming into the pit in a safety car situation, it is better to have [the system working manually].

"You control the green light and unfortunately there was a mistake.

"We will analyse what we did in the other pit-stops," he added.

Ferrari are alone with the light system, with other teams using the conventional stop/go 'lollipops' held by mechanics in front of the car.

The Italian team also had a problem with the system at the European Grand Prix in Valencia when world champion Kimi Raikkonen set off before the fuel nozzle had been removed, injuring a mechanic.

Domenicali said there was no question of the mechanic responsible for the incident being replaced for the remaining three races which will decide the championship, with Massa now seven points behind McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

"We win together and we lose together. In that respect the philosophy will not change because of one unfortunate mistake," added the team boss.

Massa said he had spoken to the mechanic and told him there were no hard feelings.

"I'm not the kind of guy who goes to the guy and fights with him," said the Brazilian.

"So I go to the guy and give him even more motivation because we need him and we need everybody together for the last three races."

  1. Ferrari have revealed a fault in their light system that is actually worse than i previously thought! They say that the green light is activated by the removal of the fuelling hose from the car, so this does not take into account the fact that another car may be passing the Ferrari pit at the time of the green light being activated. Now unless it is the responsibility of the re- fueller to check the pit lane for clearence prior to releasing the rig, then there is no way the driver can be confident that he is being released cleanly and without the risk of ploughing into another car in the pit lane - or do the Ferrari team expect every other driver to keep an eye on the Ferrari fueller when they are in the pit lane - either way, its bully boy tactics by the reds - as they expect all the other teams drivers to give the Ferrari pits a cautious wide berth!
It is the responsibility of the team to ensure that the driver is released safely and not the other drivers to give way to Ferrari and this system clearly shows that Ferrari are more interested in their own cars and not the safety of the pit lane in general. I cannot blame the drivers for this. It is the teams fault and it is convenient to have an electronic system to blame as opposed to team error. If it happens again, the team should be deducted points.

  2. lol...I can't stop chuckling. I never read these comments until recently but now I'm hooked. Have to agree with Sagittarius1958 that these furtile minds should be put to better use. Ok, so I am a Ferrari fan and I recognise why some people think the whole thing is biased but over the 30 years that I've been watching Formula 1 I have seen some odd decisions all round. It is far from a perfect sport! But like any sport there are human arbiters making decisions that are likely to appear unfair and be wrong from time to time but most things balance out over time. Last word: Lewis is a damn fine driver in the most professional team so he will win loads; GPs, and Championships. Enjoy the racing and leave the abuse to the football terraces.

  6. Dear Mr Ferrari... 20 other teams use a very simple, but very effective method... Yes, it's called the Lollipop Man... He can see from the very front of the car when all is ready and he can give you the GO signal... Perhaps you should try it instead of embarrassing yourself time and time again!!!!!!!!

  7. #107. you muppet... Every one has the right to express their opinions, but when you say things like "Senna had no intention of turning in on lap one" or what ever you came out with, i bet you have never gone faster than 100mph in your entire life and these guys do it daily! Show a little respect for what these guys do... (and in the great Ayrton Senna's case died doing)... and keep you mouth shut on things you cant possibly understand.
You have made me realy angry saying that.
Sorry to all the rest of you who are posting genuine comments on here.... ok im done.

  8. Is everone here forgetting that no teams are not allowed to modify the fuel rigs in anyway , fashion , or form ? They even admit in the fourth paragraph of this article the lights are in someway connected to the release handels . I remember all of these rigs are supplied by one manufacturer , and the regulations forbid any tampering and modifying . I hope someone from the FIA will make an inquiry before someone gets killed .

  9. When are Ferrari going to give up on this semi-automated pit lane system when it is clearly flawed? - not to mention downright dangerous!

Ferrari will likely wait until there is a serious accident in the pit lane then they'll have no option but to withdraw it. Typical Ferrari - sailing close to the wind and always trying to get one over on everyone else regardless. If it were another F1 team who had devised the semi-automatic pit lane system and then experienced so many near misses with it, Ferrari would be screaming the place down for the FIA to ban it. But as it's Ferrari's idea - that's okay.

I just hope this dangerous and flawed system gets withdrawn or banned by the FIA before there is a collision in the pit lane and someone really does gets hurt!

  10. Ferrari and Massa should lose all their points for the season and the team should be fined 100 million dollars. Obviously, they tried to gain an unfair advantage by having Massa drive off with the fuel hose attached. This would save time on subsequent pit stops because they wouldn't have to re-attach the hose to the car. It's the old pre-attached fuel hose trick.

obviously you haven't been watching the sport that long. lets go back and help you out, Schumacher stalled his car at monaco in the qualifying and yet was sent to the back of the grind for the race after qualifying from the first and second stages shouldn't have been sent to the back of the time sheet of the 3 qualifying stage which would have put him in 10th? why should all the other teams that weren't racing in the final stages benefit because he parked his car on a qualfying lap? and they weren't even on track? that was in 2006, so i am guessing you started watching f1 when hamilton came into f1, lets go further back. Schumacher is given a 2 second time penalty in hungry because Alonso purply slowed down on a yellow flag in free practice knowing schummy was behind him hoping he would avoid and over take him which he did to avoid an accident, instead of just punishing Alonso they also give schummy the same penalty because he over took. By the way Schummy is driving for ferrari, just incase you didn't know. Lets go back in 1990, at the japanish grand prix, Prost is first and senna is second, senna has no intentions of turning lap one, at the start all he does is goes straight and takes out prost who is about to turn and himself and wins the world championship, Prost drives for a ferrari and Senna for mclaren. No penalty for mclaren? so please don't say ferrari never get punished, i've been watching f1 for a long time and ferrari hadn't won anything until schumacher came along and always got screwed points. especially at the start of schumacher career with ferrari, williams and mclaren were the top dogs and before that benneton and Williams again and mclaren before them. 83 was the last time ferrari won a constructor title and 79 the drivers title. So all you newbees who think they have been watching f1 and all the races. start renting old races because you don't seem to know anything about ferrari.

  16. btw terry elliot Max Mosley's father was more than a nazi supporter. The word Quisling originated from Norway, it was the name of the puppet leader the nazis installed in Norway. Mosley's father would have been the British Quisling had the nazis conquered our country.
And what do you mean "strange to say" - I know I am old fart but really!;-)

From BigBill, on Tue 30 Sep 1:02PM
  17. Yup, can understand what you are saying terry elliot but I was really talking about some of the comments you see on these pages. You can probably take many of the great drivers over the years and there may have been things you didn't like about them. Schumacher was perhaps the greatest driver of them all, but as a bloke? Alonso is a self centred individual, but again a great driver. But I cannot see what it is about Lewis Hamilton that makes a whole bunch of people want to call him such nasty things. Maybe he is arrogant, I dunno but I would have thought most, if not all, F1 drivers have that property - as well as the GP2 boys. Lewis is plainly a very good driver just look at how he performed relative to Alonso last year. So what is it? And the only answer I can come up with is racism.

From BigBill, on Tue 30 Sep 12:57PM
  18. Strange to admit but I think Bill Mac has a point. When the head of F1 is a white man and his number two has been found to be a bondage loving son of a Nazi supporter it does make you wonder how on earth Hamilton does get these strange penalties. Now I am not saying that anyone in the upper echelons on F1 are racist but recent events do start to put seeds of doubt into your mind...

  19. I thiknk this Ferrari vs Mclaren thing is hiding one more important issue, what is Ferrari's issue with Adrian Sutil? Raikkonene runs into the back of him in Monaco and puts him out of the race. In Valencia, they release Massa into his path nearly causing an accident. In Singapore they release Massa into his path again, and this time Massa takes the fuel rig with him spraying fuel and the poor guy. And then Massa's car in the middle of the track on an exit to a corner assists in putting Sutil into a wall as he avoids the Scarlet ones. Now I'm no conspiracy theorist, but do Ferrari have a serious problem with him or not?

    From ginger_gitt, on Tue 30 Sep 12:35PM
  20. Ferrari arnt going to do anything about their (unsafe) trafic light system because they wont be able to let Massa out into the path of Adrian Sutil's Force India any more!
