Premier League - Team of the Week

Eurosport - Mon, 29 Sep 17:49:00 2008

It was a weekend to forget for Tottenham, Everton and Newcastle, judging by our Flops of the Week - but there was better news for West Brom and Liverpool in the Team of the Week.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League - Portsmouth's Glen Little challenges Tottenham's Benoit Assou-Ekotto for the ball - 0

HOW IT WORKS

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK (4-2-2)

Fernando 'El Nino' Torres is back in form for Liverpool after banging in two goals in three minutes against fierce rivals Everton and is joined by a resurgent Steven Gerrard. Jose Bosingwa continues to impress for Chelsea at right-back while Hull's Michael Turner retains his place in the centre of the back four after helping the Tigers beat Arsenal at The Emirates. Our player of the week is England hopeful Scott Carson, who was brilliant as West Brom beat Middlesbrough away from home. THAT error against Croatia late last year is forgotten.

1. Scott Carson (West Brom) - 41

2. Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea) - 39

3. Patrice Evra (Manchester United) - 38

4. Michael Turner (Hull City) - 39

5. Jonas Olsson (West Brom) - 39

6. Stiliyan Petrov (Aston Villa) - 40

7. Antonio Valencia (Wigan) - 39

8. Tugay (Blackburn) - 39

9. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) - 38

10. Fernando Torres (Liverpool) - 41

11. Carlton Cole (West Ham) - 39

FLOPS OF THE WEEK (4-4-2)

Ross Turnbull claims the spot between the sticks after that loss to the Baggies while his right-back at Boro Justin Hoyte also gets the nod. Spurs are ably represented by no-hopers Benoit Assou-Ekotto (pictured) and Gilberto, making his first start, as well as Roman 'Berbatov he ain't' Pavlyuchenko up front. And naturally Newcastle provide our centre-half pairing after a fifth consecutive league defeat.

1. Ross Turnbull (Middlesbrough) - 26

2. Justin Hoyte (Middlesbrough) - 24

3. Benoit Assou-Ekotto (Tottenham) - 21

4. Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle) - 23

5. Steven Taylor (Newcastle) - 24

6. Gilberto (Tottenham) - 18

7. Mikel Arteta (Everton) - 26

8. Marouane Fellani (Everton) - 24

9. Geremi (Newcastle) - 24

10. Yakubu (Everton) - 22

11. Roman Pavlyuchenko (Tottenham) - 23
