Watford defender Jay DeMerit fears he may require surgery to remedy his eye complaint.

The American cut his eye while removing a contact lens and it has become infected.

DeMerit says he cannot see out of the eye and is set to see a specialist who may recommend an operation.

"It was a freak thing," DeMerit told the Daily Mail. "It got worse and worse and I still can't see out of that eye.

"Scar tissue is starting to develop, which is blurring my vision, so I'm seeing a specialist and I might have to have surgery."

Watford have made a bright start to the season, but injuries are beginning to mount as Heidar Helguson is struggling with a calf problem.
