Botha (pictured), who was part of the South Africa squad that won the 2007 World Cup, will play his last game for the London club against Bath on Saturday.

The 27-year-old's departure come as another blow for Quins, who have yet to win this season after a summer of shame that saw them lose director of rugby Dean Richards due to the Bloodgate scandal.

"I am personally very saddened to see Gary departing us for South Africa," said head coach John Kingston, who replaced Richard at The Stoop.

"He has been an integral part of the recent success of Quins. Equally, the club understands his situation and were clearly happy to facilitate his return back home."

Botha shared hooking duties at Quins with Tani Fuga and was part of one of the most effective front rows in the Premiership last season, playing an integral role in Quins reaching the play-offs and Heineken Cup quarter-finals.

"I have clearly enjoyed my time at Quins and it is with a heavy heart that I will be leaving," Botha said in a statement.

"I would like to place on record my gratitude to Quins for agreeing to my situation and allowing an early release from my contract.

"I have made many friends in my time at the club and will watch with interest the progress of the team."

Fuga will take over as the club's first-choice hooker and will be supported by Chris Brooker and Kevin Corrigan.
