The BBC has responded to criticism over its coverage of the penultimate MotoGP round in Malaysia, saying schedule constraints forced it to sacrifice post-race interviews and celebration.
A delay in proceedings at Sepang, caused by a torrential downpour before the start, played havoc with the live coverage on BBC, forcing a channel change mid-way through the race, while the transmission was then curtailed before the podium celebrations and interviews.
This was especially frustrating for fans since Valentino Rossi won his ninth world title by finishing third in the race.
“The start of the MotoGP race from Sepang, Malaysia was delayed by 40 minutes due to torrential rain and therefore the programme ended up overrunning our scheduled slot on BBC One,” Crash.net was told.
“We were unable to overrun on BBC One because Match of the Day was scheduled for that morning and due to contractual reasons we couldn’t move the programme. In addition, the Andrew Marr show was also scheduled and with the guests booked to attend meant that particular programme also couldn’t be moved.
“However, we were offered 30 minutes on BBC Two to show the end of the race. As BBC Two had already dropped one children’s programme, we couldn’t extend our coverage any more and as a result, we weren’t allowed any more time and had to end the programme before the podium and interviews.
“At the end of the programme, we did promise our viewers we would bring them all this on the re-run at 12.45 - which we did, as well as making it available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
“The Formula One qualifying session in Interlagos was treated exactly the same as this particular MotoGP race. The Formula One was moved to BBC Two after already displacing the scheduled time for Strictly Come Dancing. The delay in moving the Formula One was due to the fact we had to wait for an available slot in BBC Two schedules.”
The BBC assumed live television rights for MotoGP in 2009, the start of an exclusive five-year deal until 2013.

I was one of those who complained on the BBC website that Sunday morning after their so called 'coverage' had finished.
Bloody disgusting that they can't show the full coverage - it should be returned to Eurosport to do a better job.
The BBC shoud do the honourable thing and give up the right to broadcast Moto GP. If this had happened to the dull as dishwater F1 the F1 organisers would not have stood for it and the BBC would have been punished for a contractural breach.
It is time Dorna understood that the self opinionated and anti motorcycle BBC do not like motorbike racing and will never do anything to promote the sport. Dorna, terminate this horrendous agreement with the BBC right now.
I noticed that BBC channel 302 is closed to allocat bandwith to Freview HD.
They say, but we await their "do", that the red button is still available. Now how are we going to record the 125 and MotoGP2 next year? Or at Valencia. Or in the middle of the night? Football will bump the coverage to this mythical red button which cannot be accessed by channel number, if MotoGP is available at all there. I have a Philips Pronto remote (does more than the BBC can imagine). That might do it, but only if I record as many channels as available, which I won't know at the time of programming. Satellite coverage gives more alternative red buttons but you can't get at them (on Sky anyway)
So Freesat? The PVR that can record the whole multiplex is not yet designed.
We are left with iPlayer NOT - The BBC haven't put 125 & MotoGP2 on it, least ways I don't see it at present. And am unlikely even if I had broadband at home. In addition to my licence fee, I may have to pay a levy for the broadband I don't have.
Nice on UK Gov.
Sorry that i have not read all the comments above but i do have some very strong opinions regarding this topic.
I am going try and not make this too long and boring.
From the start of this season it was a shambles to be honest, a very half hearted attempt at displaying the worlds greatest motorbike event. Not only the bad coverage but the commentary, harsh but true i even hear these comments from people that are just getting into motogp.
Dont tell me that you guys believe the lame excuses from the bbc. Absolute RUBBISH.
So BBC1 which was showing a non live program (match of the day) chose to ditch the gp. How many channels do they run, what happened to all the interactive channels. I'll tell you, they were showing bbc proms (live music event various artist) on both and they were'nt even live, they have been replaying the whole week.
Dont let me start on the 125cc, 250cc classes. NO MORE EXCUSES. DORNA FIX UP.
It's not all bad tho.... There are 2 postive things about the BBC's coverage:-
1. Suzi Perry. You can't take it away from her lads, she's a looker and more importantly, she definitely knows her s*&t when it comes to Moto GP.
2. The picture quality is better on the BBC. However I only watch the bits before and after the race, cos as much as I like the picture, I can't do them two clown race commentators. They just seem to fumble their way through the race dropping in the odd embarasing comment. They always seem to spot the overtaking/crashes etc.. way after everybody else has already spotted them.
While I'm here Mr Eurosport, Can somebody tell me why in the UK we have Eurosport HD and not ONCE this year have we had a single Moto GP race in it? That was one of my main reasons for purchasing SKY HD in the first place. Last year they showed the classic Laguna Seca in HD but now It seems Eurosport also doesn't think Moto GP is good enough for their premium channel. We did however finally get some bike racing last Sunday. It was one of the final WSBK races...................
........................Clear ly there was no live cycling, tennis, rugby, rowing, athletics, under 21's football, knitting or world championship line dancing goin on that day.
Im really not surprised at all about the BBC's alleged "commitment" to Moto GP and it's also Ironic that Match Of The Day was mention in their statement.
I was watching MoTD the other Saturday when between games, Mr Lineker mentioned the live coverage of the Philip Island Moto GP which was on the following morning. I looked at the stock photo they used and it was of Danny Pedrosa on his honda cranked over in a bend (with number 26 on the front) and Nicky Hayden......... on his Honda behind him... Now last time I looked BBC, Nicky rode a big red Ducati. He has for a full season now and btw Danny hasn't worn 26 all season either, he uses the number 3 now. You can't even be bothered to put a more accurate/up to date picture up. How simples is that to do? Not a big thing I know, but Is this the commitment level we have all expected? Would you advertise Formula 1 to the british public and show a pic of Lewis Hamilton in a Go-Kart or Formula 3 car? Come on BBC get with it, show the commitment you promised us at the start of the season!!!
I like this part of the excuse they made,
The Formula One qualifying session in Interlagos was treated exactly the same as this particular MotoGP race. The Formula One was moved to BBC Two after already displacing the scheduled time for Strictly Come Dancing. The delay in moving the Formula One was due to the fact we had to wait for an available slot in BBC Two schedules.”
Yes they moved the QUALIFYING !! so what who gives a @#$% ,if that was the race they would not have moved it.
BBC should never have bid for the contract if they did not want to show ALL the races live plus a re-run. To not show the celebration podium and interviews when someone (whether Valentino or not) has won the world championship is a disgrace. What a disappointment all because some people who could have stayed up a little later on Saturday night would rather watch Match of the Day - the next day!!
Good idea, put on BBC3 OR BBC4 the tree races 125 & 250 and GP plus Julian & and Toby,
cant the bbc respont
Lets have it back on eurosport, at least julian and toby know what they're talking about and make it both factual and fun, and all the people who say "i haven't got cable etc" well then you're not really a fan then are you?- REPSOL ROSS
i miss the half of it cause i had it recorded on bbc1 on sky box and they change it over half way through it,was annoyed over it,miss the end of it,thought motogp has right to show it all on one station even it was delayed
now here is an interesting point.
.
Last weekend was the end of BST so I set my PVR's to switch on at 3am for 5 minutes to be sure that the clock had seen the time time signal and reset itself.
.
I am not sure this worked. Was I too clever for myself and the BBC not as clever? Either way My hour before did not quite cover the start of one race.
.
perhaps I sould write to feedback at the bbc. It might be broadcast on the radio at 13.30 Fri on Radio4 - it might - but do the BBC listen to their own programmes?
Oh it is worse than that. I have a two tuner PVR plus a single tuner PVR and on a w/e with SBK on International Eurosport & WRC it gets a bit impossible to record everything - except Robbie Williams for the 20th time. Like a fool, I believed the EPG it said channel 301(one of yer red buttons) was braodcasting qualifying. They switched channels (or couldn't be arsed to program the EPG properly). Then on Race day I recorded 301 & 302 and bits of BBC 1 or 2 to cover the MotoGP race, then again at 12 pm. Channels 301 and 302, by then, were listed as showing 125 & 250 - both (because my Humax will display information back to midnight). Needless to say the channel I might have chosen was wrong (Robbie Williams for the 30th time (no exageration)), but the other recording (titled RW because that's what it said at the time of setting) was the desired programme.
Needless to say I record about an hour before and several hours after the stated times because of eventuallities like rain. Something I learned to do with Eurosport coverage long since. It is the nature of the beast that is "broadcasters" and live events also can run over.
Now if we were talking about football, we would not be having this kind of conversation.
Why the hell can't the BBC use BBC3 or 4 to broadcast motogp in the afternoon. Neither are used during the day!
the really GOOD thing about sepang was NO suzy perry .the ultimate *keep that camera on me* poser. the BBC could save loads of money by sacking her and that annoying aussie commentator who is useless.
Imagine the national outrage if the beeb had actually dumped match of the day or the Andrew Marr show for some noisy people on bikes. What a nation of Bell'ends we really are !! It's no wonder we have had very little world class GP riders in the last few decades.
Why is it that our nations media spend staggering amounts of time and money covering sports which we are generally useless at and virtually ignore the sports we do happen to be good at. Just look at Bradley, Scott and Danny, some of the finest racing talent to come out of the UK in years........Did i say UK there ? Sorry i meant to say Spain !!
l'm not whinging l pay pay good money for my tv lience ....l'm not bothered about the pre race stuff or the interveiws ..l just want to see proper coverage of the race ........please BBC answer please !!!1
Stop whinging everyone and be thankful us plebs get to watch some bike action on the Beeb, (or on any terrestrial channel for that matter) I haven't got the time to wait for the interviews etc. afterward anyway. Get over it!
BBC coverage of motogp is absolutely @#$%, It is unexcuseable the way they dealt with probably the most important race in the calender, F1 & Bernie would NOT let them get away with it, He'd take the rights away so Dorna is to blame also, but they edged their bets by letting EUROSPORT cover motogp
bbc red button is @#s% in freeview very dispointing, why carnt the bbc repeapt the 125 and 250 same as they repeat the moto gp .Spanish tv have really good coverage ...they repeat the races tthree or four times
