Carling Cup - Managers: Wenger looked at Aquilani

Eurosport - Wed, 28 Oct 22:53:00 2009

Arsene Wenger has admitted Alberto Aquilani came across his radar a couple of years ago, but was concerned by his fitness levels.

Alberto Aquilani Liverpool 2009 - 0

Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool

Arsene Wenger: "We were interested in Aquilani the year before, but last year he didn't play a lot and we didn't feel that this year we needed a player in this position.

"There was very little difference between the teams.

"We looked dangerous and they looked dangerous, but I think there is enough quality here to win trophies again this season."

Rafael Benitez: "I felt that the worst thing today was the defeat but there were a lot of players who show passion, character and quality on the pitch and Aquilani was one of them.

"He showed the quality he has, he needs to improve his fitness but you can see that he can pass the ball, in the final third he can be a big difference."

Manchester City 5-1 Scunthorpe

Mark Hughes: "We have got virtually everyone back now. We have been able to rest players and the injured ones will be back for the weekend.

"We have a full complement of riches now to chose from, and we are delighted with the positives from this one.

"We gave Roque Santa Cruz his first game, and he was excellent. He got a fine goal and his movement and awareness of people around him was first class.

"He will now grow into his role here. And we had Michael Johnson finally back after his injuries. The goal he scored showed the quality he has, and thankfully he is back fit and well."

Nigel Adkins: "City have made it clear they want to win this tournament by the strength of the side they put out.

"If they had turned out a weakened side they could have come unstuck. We played well and created a lot of chances."

Chelsea 4-0 Bolton

Carlo Ancelotti: "I think this is a very good moment for us. Above all, because the players who returned after injury came back very well. Joe Cole came back in the last match and did very well.

"Alex and Paulo Ferreira did a very intelligent match tonight. It's a very good moment. We have to continue and maintain this atmosphere."

Gary Megson: "We didn't play as you need to play against the quality they have.

"If you don't play at a tempo that might upset Chelsea, or go into challenges that might upset them, then you're not going to damage them."

You have started worse than last season and are getting beaten by worse teams too. ANOTHER trophyless season is coming your way. It really makes me laugh when you think that winning games but no trophies is some kind of achievement. Sad thing is that you are now probably the 5th best team in the EPL. All that money spent and for what? NOTHING but a few wins over the team you are jealous of and obsessed with. "sheesh"
