SPL - Hearts stun Celtic

Eurosport - Wed, 28 Oct 21:45:00 2009

A Michael Stewart penalty was enough for Hearts to knock Celtic out 1-0 in their Co-operative Insurance Cup quarter final clash at Celtic Park.

FOOTBALL Michael Stewart Hearts - 0

The 58th minute strike from the spot stunned Celtic, for whom substitute Gergios Samaras could have had a hat-trick but for some wasteful finishing.

The hosts ended a pulsating affair with 10 men as Stephen McManus saw red in stoppage time.

Once ahead, Hearts defended manfully and enjoyed their share of fortune as Celtic twice rattled the woodwork and went close with several other chances.

Hearts could have scored in the very first minute of the match when Christan Nade sprung the Celtic offside trap and the defender who played him on - Andreas Hinkel - recovered well to make a clearance from almost on his own goal line.

A sublime pass with the outside of Nade's foot found Ian Black in space on the right of the Celtic penalty box with 35 minutes gone.

Shortly afterwards, a first time flick over the advancing Lukasz Zalusca should have led to a goal for Hearts, but Black hesitated and the chance was gone.

David Obua then attacked down the right wing and put a great cross in that Ismael Bouzid should really have done better with than fire wide.

Moments later Zheng Zhi worried Janos Balogh in the Hearts goal with a shot that whistled past the keeper's right hand post.

A goalmouth scramble on 42 minutes almost resulted in Celtic taking the lead, but Balogh was able to get in the way of Killen's close range effort and tip it over the bar.

Celtic substitute Patrick McCourt hit the bar with his first contribution, seven minutes into the half, before Danny Fox brought down Nade for a penalty that Stewart (pictured) stepped up to take.

The skipper's effort wasn't the most cleanly struck, but it crept under Zalusca to give Hearts a lead that they somehow kept until the final whistle.

Samaras saw an effort smothered by Balogh moments before the striker thought he had scored with a deft chip, which came back off the post as Samaras wheeled away to celebrate

The Greece striker then missed an outstanding chance when he somehow put wide with his head on 79 minutes, and McManus saw a header cleared off the line before his last-gasp dismissal for a crude hack on Andrew Driver.

  1. Awful game ,bad result Striker needed .

The north atlantic league seems to be the best option out of this downward spiral.
Celtic maybe rangers if they survive from scotland ,four dutch teams, four french teams two danish, two swedish, two belgium, and maybe two swiss teams to start with. Then the winners of all these leagues play of for entery the following season with bottom team in the new league relagated to play again in its national league. The idea of entery into the new league would spice up interest in all the involved national leagues

  2. Football in Scotland is poor....because we don't import nearly as many foreign talent as the "English" clubs do. Cannae wait for 2010 when England once again get mugged by a nation where most of their players play in your own "English League".

  3. Hey why are the old firm so hot under the collar! I know its because you dont get your own way now. There are 3 teams that will give both teams a good run for their money. Money I hear you say, yes money that rangers haven't got and money that celtic waste on dud players. No change there then:-)

Anyway lets be serious about all this rubbish I read every day on this site! Both clubs are in a right mess, yes, I mean both clubs not just the blue side!! I also know they will never get into the English Premiership, why? because this is a different country thats why. Now settle for what we have or move away to some sort of place (England) and watch all the forign players strutt their stuff down south. How many English players were playing in the Arsenel v Liverpool game last night? The money is to good down south, when it dries up they will all fly awayyyy.

I cant believe that THE OLD FIRM got their @#$% kicked real good and solid last night, can someone please tell me if football will continue to be a sport in SCOTLAND in 2010, maybe they should close shop once and for all, come down south and support the greatest league in the world, ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE! spend the little money you have on watching great football played by great ENGLISHMEN!

And you laugh about Rangers going into administration. If we do then its bye bye Ceptic, bye bye SPL coz the old firm is the only thing keeping scottish football running.

uve lost the dressin room already it seems

  11. Good to see the attacking style of football is paying off lol. You all laugh at Rangers for not spending but i'd rather not spend than waste millions on duds!!
So much for the best fans in the world. 20,000 in a 60,000 seater dump and thats including the hearts fans.
You slate Rangers for playing defensive football but even with 3 goalless draws in 9 games we are still equal on goal difference!!
Rangers maybe in trouble but at least we aren't in denial about it!

  12. The problem is thus: Mowbray has publicly slated his players as being "no-users", whereas Strachan says they were a joy to work with. Mowbray Knew what he was taking on when he came in, so to state now that the board need to make serious money available in January is a bit rich. Strachan took over from MON, and O'Neill's team had all but disappeared with him, hence Strach had to "put on an Elastoplast" and we know what happened against Artmedia! Artmedia was Strachan's wake-up call, but from last night's performance (poor finishing, garbage defending, etc) I suspect Mogga must be comatose. I supported your appointment, Tony.. Because I had faith and belief in your abilities. I don't like people to let me down so badly, so time to buck up, or move on! BTW: even if we beat rangers 7-0 in the next OF game, I will judge you on the team's performance, not the result!

  13. Shocking crowd last night, but a great win for the Hearts. We didn't play well, but didn't need to really, we got what most teams don't as Parkhead, a bit of luck. I was still expecting as per usual to lose a couple of injury time goals, but fair play to the team, they took a lot of stick for the draw against Falkirk and came out with a win. We will get Rangers in the semi, beat them, then get cuffed off St Mirren or St Johnstone in the final. The joy of being a Hearts fan.

What a load of rubbish in these comments. You would think that both Rangers and Celtic had quality football teams. No chance for them in the Premiership or the Championship come to that. Come on be sensible and recognise that football in Scotland is of a low standard compared with other European leagues and stop hanging on to the thought that Religion is the deciding factor as to which team you support.
