Owen frustrated by expectations

Manchester United striker Michael Owen scored his third goal of the season in the Carling Cup victory against Barnsley but remains bewildered by what some people expect of him.

Owen found the target in the 59th minute of the 2-0 win with a clinical finish at Oakwell following a ball from Fabio. Danny Welbeck had earlier put United in the driving seat after five minutes when he headed home a corner from Anderson.

"A start and a goal, you can't ask for more than that. It is how people judge me unfortunately," said Owen.

"I started a game against Bolton and was pretty pleased and thought I played pretty well. Then I looked at the papers and was given a three or four.

"But in this game I played pretty average and scored a goal and I'll probably get seven out of 10.

"I think I deserved a five in this game and seven or eight from the Bolton game."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It was a fantastic goal, he had such quick feet, it was a marvellous finish."

It was a comfortable victory for United even though Gary Neville was red-carded in the 63rd minute for clattering into Adam Hammill.

Ferguson had no quarrel with referee Chris Foy for dismissing Neville and he now faces a three-match ban.

He said: "I've just seen the sending off, and Gary did follow through with the tackle and caught the player. It was not high, just above the ankle, but in the present climate I would say that the referee was probably correct."

  1. w.z.e I think United have the bragging rights on trophies full stop, what I meant was that winning an fa cup or a league cup is just a bonus for any top side, ask Alex Ferguson which trophy he would rather win and it will be the EPL every time every day every minute, Liverpool have won two more European Cups than us so what, they havny won their domestic championship for over twenty years dont try and tell me that they have any bragging rights at all, one game ie the champions league final which I watched also AC gifted Liverpools Houllier side back into the game when it was all over, one game doesnt allow for bragging rights, ask any Liverpool fan and they will tell you first priority is to try and win the league which they have failed to do year in year out because they simply arnt good enough to do so, it will only get harder now also because they dont have any money, correct me if im wrong please do so but bragging rights to Liverpool, no i dont think so !!!!!!!!!

  3. I'm sorry Micheal. In the first place it was Rafa who got rid of MO. Then when he was available for free from Newcastle Liverpool did not get him. So there's no point in whatever you're saying.

  4. The nights that Sir Alex Ferguson rates as his 'pwoudest' moments are the European triumphs, at Aberdeen and at Man U. The EPL, it's the bread and butter, but the European glory, that's where the legends are made.

Sorry MUF, as an independent and unbiased observer, Liverpool have got the bragging rights on 'trophies worth their salt'. In fact Man U have only just overtaken Nottingham Forest & Benfica, still a way to go to catch Liverpool, Ajax, Bayern Munich, AC Milan & Real Madrid.

And as for Liverpool's 3-3 against AC Milan, that has to be one of the best games of football I've ever seen. To have the mental strength to come back from a 3-0 hammering in the first half, that's what legends are made of, Legends like Man U's 99 Euro winning team, the guts and character required to turn a defeat into victory. Ferguson knows how to do it, so does Rafa.

  5. Owen made the mistake of joining MU. He should have known that as soon as you join MU all papers and refs in England start running you down but then again what choice did he have. He needed a team with intergrity and dignity which was lacking in Liverpool.

  10. Sorry Adam B meant to say trophies worth their salt, in other words the holy grail the EPL the trophy no Liverpool player has come anywhere near nevermind touched, I presume you mean also when AC gifted you the Champions League and that side was that good you didnt even qualify the year after to defend it and they had to change the rules so as that you could defend it, yeah that was a really good Liverpool side that, in fact it was Houlliers side that won it not the fat waiters, at the end of the day you wont win the league this year either and you are turning into Man City, you only live for two games a season, against us, we will win it again 19-18 Liverfools you cant afford to get rid of the waiter and get a decent manager .

  14. If Owen stayed at Anfield he would never win a EPL, fact is top footballers want to win trophies so will move to Bigger clubs that have a better chance of doing so, thats why at the end of the season or maybe even in January Liverpool players will start to make noises and the bigger clubs will come running,Masherano is already a done deal to Barca and do you really believe Torres will stay at Liverpool and end up empty handed, he wont want to be remembered as the best striker in the world (if that is to be believed) never to win a league championship, no he will never let that happen, look at the worlds best players Ronaldo for instance he has won every trophy there is to win, Messi has too, Torres will never finish his career empty handed he wont allow that to happen, he may be kissing the Liverpool badge now but if they dont win the league soon you can guarantee he will be kissing somebody elses, we all know Liverpool wont win the league this season, how many more seasons do you think he will stay ?????????????????????????????????????????????

  17. Yep, that's right Michael (post 1) - Owen should have stayed at Anfeld and waited for the trophies to come. Oh no, he's got a brain, that's why he left ... he decided that his career aspirations weren't limited to having his picture on the benefit's statements of the Scamfield crowd

You would have been a HERO in football had it been you remain at Anfield.Your frustration will continue till the end of your career. The biggest mistake and frustration will be in your present club.Your are too narrow minded.Afterall i do blame your manager who together with you have no forsight
