Goals from Henri Camara and Emmerson Boyce saw Wigan come from behind to beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at the JJB Stadium on Saturday.
After a tight first half, the Baggies took the lead through Ishmael Miller shortly after the break, before missing two gilt-edged chances that could have seen them put the game to bed.
Camara levelled the scores ten minutes later with an acrobatic volley, before Boyce thumped home a superb header with just five minutes remaining.
Right from the start West Brom's desire shone through, with a powerful run from James Morrison taking him in behind the Wigan defence and Miller narrowly failing to connect in the centre.
Six minutes later it was the Wigan fans who were out of their seats, this time after Camara volleyed over from close range after Titus Bramble had flicked on a corner toward the back post.
Gradually though, the Baggies' impressive work-rate in midfield began to pay dividends, as a Jonathan Greening cross required an fine clearance from Boyce, before Greening later opted to go for goal himself after a fine run, only to smack the ball high over the bar.
The first half may have rather petered out towards the end, though the second half saw the game explode into life in dramatic fashion.
First Miller capitalised on a lapse in concentration by Bramble before tucking the ball past Chris Kirkland and inside the post to give the visitors the lead.
Then the big striker turned provider, this time flicking a long-ball on for the onrushing Morrison who was foiled by the feet of Kirkland.
Moments later the Wigan defence was left in tatters yet again. Possession was conceded cheaply in midfield, and Morrison once again found himself bearing down on Kirkland, though the big goalkeeper prevailed once again, parrying the midfielder's rising shot clear of danger.
The Baggies would be made to pay for their profligacy on the hour mark, as Camara volleyed home an acrobatic equaliser after Paul Robinson left a header back to his goalkeeper woefully short.
The effect on Wigan was marked. They raised their tempo to take the game to West Brom in midfield, though the Baggies refused to rest on their laurels, with Miller in particularly working like a Trojan to put them back into the lead.
With five minutes remaining, the visitors suffered the knockout blow. Boyce rose high at the far post to meet substitute Jason Koumas's corner, and he sent a thumping header above the man on the line and into the top left hand corner.
While Wigan will be grateful for three points from a game that could easily have gone against them, West Brom will be left to reflect on Morrison's two golden chances that should have given them their second away win of the season.
