Premier League - Police probe Bent racism claim

Eurosport - Sun, 29 Nov 11:35:00 2009

Northumbria Police have launched an investigation after Sunderland striker Darren Bent said his mother had been racially abused by one of the club's fans.

2009-10 Premier League Sunderland's Darren Bent celebrates - 0

Bent made the claim on Twitter following his side's 1-0 Premier League defeat at Wigan.

"So we get beaten by Wigan and to make matters worse my mum gets racially abused by a Sunderland fan," he wrote.

"I won't stand for that."

The Black Cats stated that they were working with the police to find out what happened.

"This club is liaising with Northumbria Police to fully investigate this matter," the statement read.

"Behaviour of this kind is totally unacceptable to our football club."

It is not the first time that Bent has entered the limelight due to musings on his Twitter feed.

While his big-money summer move to Sunderland was still under negotiation, he lambasted Daniel Levy, chairman of his then club Tottenham Hotspur, and was fined as a result.

"Seriously getting p***** off now," he wrote of his desire to leave. "Why can't anything be simple. It's so frustrating hanging round doing jack s***.

"Do I wanna go Hull City. No. Do I wanna go Stoke. No. Do I wanna go Sunderland. Yes. So stop f****** around Levy.

"Sunderland are not the problem in the slightest."

He has been a success since arriving in the North East, scoring nine goals and claiming a place in Fabio Capello's England squad.

He started the recent friendly against Brazil.

  1. does anyone know why the posts I put on yesterday have beeen deleted or removed?? i was one of the first posters on this board regarding this subjec. Sadly we do have some idiotic small minded biggoted people who call themselves fans. Well if you agree or support what these morans have done or said then you are not a fan at all.
I hope they are dicovered and banned from the ground for life as they deserve to be hammered with the full weight of the law as well.
I think we are all appauled at this happening and it is a situation i hope doesnt happen again as these so called fans regardless of who they allegedley support are an embarassment to football in general. Now can we all stop trying to score points against one another and all stand up against these idiots and get rid of racisum from the field of our fantastic game.

  6. Downy100. Your "If she wasn't black... " comment is irrelevant but worst of all is "The guy who said it didn't know it was DB's Mother".
No civilised human being goes around insulting middle aged women. If I was DB I'd want to kick this morons head in.

  7. So the fact it was in a bar and they didnt know it was DB's mum makes it acceptable.

  12. Where is our friend, Walt Jabsco, when you need him??????
He knows as well as I that we need to turn to The Specials in a time like this...

"If you have a racist friend, now is the time, now is the time for your friendship to end
Be it your sister, be it your brother, be it your cousin or your uncle or your lover
If you have a racist friend, now is the time, now is the time for your friendship to end
Be it your best friend, or any other, is it your husband or your father or your mother?

Tell them, change their views or change their friends, now is the time, now is the time for your friendship to end

So if you know a racist who thinks he is your friend, now is the time, now is the time for your friendship to end
Call yourself my friend, now is the time to make up your mind, don't try to pretend
Be it your sister, be it your brother, be it your cousin or your uncle or your lover
So if you are a racist, our friendship has got to end
And if your friends are racist, don't pretend to be my friend
So if you have a racist friend, now is the time, now is the time for our friendship to end..."

  13. Toony. London has always been more racially integrated than towns and cities in the NE. In my experience, I don't hear racial comments / abuse at London grounds. Can't really remember hearing many in the 70s & 80s except perhaps at West Ham and Millwall.
I saw plenty of trouble in London but at the same time it was usually a lot uglier elsewhere around the country.

At one point i thought P(rick)Wilson was a stand up guy but today he has been well and truly dug out and exposed as the nasty vindictive bully that he is. As for his pathetic childish "threat" about the gloves being off....................and?

"Racial hatred is usually borne out of ignorance"
You then agreed that supporters of London clubs will pick a fight with anyone coz they dont discriminate.

So youre saying this is ok and theyre not ignorant?

From Tony K, on Sun 29 Nov 10:16PM
  16. Toony... yes supporters of London clubs will pick a fight with anyone but that's the point... they don't discriminate. In my experience the racist element disappeared a long time ago with them.

From PATRICK, on Sun 29 Nov 9:56PM
  17. Trouble is Tony, he can dish it but can't take it - like many of them on here!
I am constantly reading their comments on NUFC pages and their constant references to us as 'scum', and our groud as the 'landfill', and 'administration' this, and 'liquidation' that! P(rick)Wilson is a prime example; he refused to back me up in condemning the nasty, vicious remarks once (not banter, just vile stuff). Here he is again! When i condemn the disgraceful racist behaviour of his club's fan or fans all he does is attack me with these personal insults. Let me make this clear, if it happened at St James Park, i would be just as outraged and just as vociferous in my condemnation!
That is why he is a chump - instead of condemning me (simply because i am a Newcastle United supporter) he should be condemning the racist element in his club; just as i would do if the roles were reversed.

Comment 12 point 1 - Good point but you all swore blind that money had been spent and argued the @#$% with me. I agree with all you have said apart from the london clubs thing that is total rubbish theyd pick a fight in an empty room

From Tony K, on Sun 29 Nov 9:43PM
  19. I still dont know where i'm supposed to have "overstepped the mark" or "drawn a line in the sand" thus causing "the gloves to come off". PWilson you sure do like your cliches tonight! I actually think that for once my remarks today really do carry some weight. Truth hurts does it?
