World Tour Finals - Davydenko downs Federer

Reuters - Sat, 28 Nov 17:31:00 2009

Nikolay Davydenko ended seven years of pain against Roger Federer, beating the world number one 6-2 4-6 7-5 to reach the final of the ATP World Tour Finals in London for a second successive year.

The Russian had lost all 12 of his previous clashes with the Swiss magician but produced an inspired performance in front of 17,500 enthralled fans inside the O2 Arena to resist a Federer fightback.

Federer was blown away in the first set, losing his serve three times, but he gradually found his range to level the match and then sought out victory in the deciding set.

With Davydenko serving to stay alive at 4-5, Federer conjured up a shot of breathtaking audacity, meeting a Davydenko smash with a leaping, swerving smash of his own to move within two points of yet another victory over Davydenko.

However, the Russian responded to reel off the next four points and then found the baseline with one of his pinpoint backhands in the next game to break Federer's serve.

As he served for the match, Davydenko slipped 30-40 behind but he came back with a sizzling forehand winner and claimed probably the most satisfying win of his career when Federer slapped a service return into the net after one hour 55 minutes.

"I waited for a very long time to beat Federer, losing 12 times, and to beat him in London it's very special," the 28-year-old Davydenko, who first lost to Federer in 2002, said on court after an admirably muted celebration on matchpoint.

"I knew Federer would try and come back and he tried to win at 5-4 on my serve but he didn't and I came back. When he hit that smash I thought he was lucky again, I thought: No, not again, 13 times in a row, to lose again'."

Davydenko will play Swede Robin Soderling or Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday's final.

  1. 130 Libee. I shared your same comment. I am Roger's fan and he is the reason I love to watch tennis again after the Sampras / Agassi / Chang golden age era. As I have said in a few previous post, it is not realistic for us as his fan to dream that our hero can continue to win as he did in the past. Other players from his generation (Safin / Hewitt...) are already out. He is one of a kind. Only true champion like Federer / Sampras can remain competitive up to the age of 32-33 and still has chance to win major. But Roger has the potential to win much more than other past great champion. It is just frustrating me as his fan to see him keep losing match by his own error, many times not really beaten by particularly well play from his opponent. His current consistency and stability is below average in his own standard. There were so many matches / titles that he should not have lost in the past 2 yrs.....

By the way, I agree that Roger is a bit arrogant but he is still a nice gentlemen. Most players on tour have positive comment to his attitude (e.g Roddick / Nadal / Rafter....) and all said that this guy never treat himself as the king and he is always kind and polite to everyone. But as a special player with all kind of expectation on his shoulder, it is hard for him to face defeat (especially against Nadal) but he never showed any bad attitude to his rival. He just hate to admit that he has more problem to handle Nadal. All great champion should have the heart and this little arrogant attitude to defense himself as the best. On the other hand, Nadal is the most humble player. He never said he is better than Roger after a win even though he has a better winning record against him and he still keep emphsize than Roger is the best of all time. Hope Nadal can bounce back next yr. Tennis is not as fun when Roger and Nadal are not at their best.

  2. What is this all about ... Federer arrogant ... unsporting in defeat.? I don't recall Pete Sampras being that gracious either in defeat. Its a hallmark of great champions - they are used to winning - losing doesn't come easy to them. And if anyone thinks Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Del Potro et al take defeat any better than Fed, they are fooling themselves. They may not show their emotions as much but they are just the same inside. I've never bought the "I'm very 'umble" patter from Nadal - and nor do I much care for Djokovic's victory celebrations. If Federer shed any tears at all (and I don't think he did, at least not till he got to his locker room), they should have been tears of frustration at his inconsistent game over the past few months. The match with Del Potro told me all I needed to know about his chances of winning the London tournament if he came up against an inspired opponent - zero.

  4. How is it even possible to know what is going on in another person's heart? Are people judging another as being arrogance based on their facial expressions? on their bodily reactions to a highly engaging activity? why necessarily arrogance? maybe it is exhyberance, joy, relief!!?? whichever it may be they sure put on an exciting display of tennis for us to enjoy, why can't we just appreciate that?

  5. very good post LilBee.

  6. LilBee don’t make things to complicated.. this story started about Federer, that he is not humble in defeat. And he definitely isn’t, especially comparing to Rafa or Novak - BUT, that doesn’t mean he is not a good man ! maybe he has full right to be arrogant, being such great champion.. maybe he is just too cold. not hot blooded like Djoko who is on the other side often overreacting, which I don’t like. People are different, but the sport is the same.

  7. Of course you can have the right, it basically comes with the territory. But there's a distinction between being arrogant, and being evilly arrogant : Federer who is up at least a class in comparison to his rivals, when he loses a match for example, or a point he knows he could have won, he has a right to be sad or angry at himself, and that behaviour you interpret as arrogance, only because you are a Nadal fan or a Djokovic fan, or an "x" fan, and then there's arrogance like when Murray yells "come on" when his opponents make a double fault, or when Djokovic pumps his fists and yells at the spectators and punches his chest, and then there's Nadal who has the evilest squint when he stares at his opponents or up at his box... You know, each and every player has his her own courtside antics that anyone can interpret however they want. You call Federer arrogant? I call him one of the most passionate players out there. And he has the right to be passionate. Just like Nadal has the right to pick his bum (sorry had to mention that) or to spend 5 minutes placing his bottles in ridiculous manners or Djokovic bouncing the balls 46 times before serving or....

  8. "And for someone with his status and achievements, he can be as arrogant as he wants, if you ask me."

Sorry, but I don't understand this kind of an opinion. Even if you're the GOAT,you can't have the right to be arrogant.

  9. Jude, I absolutely agree with you about Davydenko, and most of the time I feel that way about Dementieva. These two have both killed themselves on court trying to get somewhere, playing fantastic tennis at times and giving their "better" opponents more grief than expected, yet there never seems to be an "award". It's a shame, truly, because it is players of their calibre that constitute tennis aswell, not just the top two or five players in the world. I knew Davydenko would win against Federer regarded he didnt choke. He's been playing outstanding tennis all week whereas Fed hasn't. and I am watching the final right now as I type and he's a break up in the first set and I am simply very pleased. Hope he goes on to win! Nothing against Delpo, I just really think Davydenko deserves this more.
Destong, obviously Federer isn;t gonna play at 28 the way he did at 24, it is simply crazy to expect that and to compare his play, but I'll tell you what - he's been around and stuck to his guns for so long, that even now when he is "sliding" he is still very much a threat and up there neck-to-neck with the younger, fresher, rising tennis players, he is STILL no. 1 and that is pretty much enough! If from now on he can win 1 grand slam a year and a few singles titles, that's enough. Remember, he has probably played twice as much tennis this year than Davydenko, reaching all four GS finals, winning two, etc etc. And still, he finished the year at no. 1, still he fought hard til the last game, still he posed a threat to his opponents. He is not going to win everything anymore, but he'll be up there with the best, possibly leading the way for a bit longer! And for someone with his status and achievements, he can be as arrogant as he wants, if you ask me.
Davydenko takes first set, whoo hoooo!!!

  10. Some Roger fans here are really pathetic. They can't take any loss, either they attack to Rafa and talk about how arrogant loser he is (in fact,he was the one who signs all the autographs after losing every match, not your hero Federer) or they can't give credit to his opponents. He lost in Melbourne and New York because he gave them to his opponents? Pathetic stuff.

From cero, on Sun 29 Nov 2:30PM
  11. LOL. For all those who insulting Federer at the moment, breath free, i know you guys waiting for this opportunity a while since his dominance, it doenst bother anyway now and he is ending as world number 1, yet another achievement of his many achievements and counting...

  12. Refreshing for Davydenko to finally beat him, good luck in the final! Blow me Donny :X

    From opera.aria, on Sun 29 Nov 12:19PM
  13. Davyenko played very well and he deserve to win. Hope he can win this year final. He is a skillful and classy player. On the other hand, it is another disappointing lose by Federer. For 4 straight matches, he simply gave the 1st set to his opponent. He can't expect luck to be on his side all the time and thought he could catch up by winning next two sets. He can only survive this in a GS for a 5 set match. If he continue to have a slow start in all match, he cannot stay long with all the younger top players today. He can only claim himself for this defeat. He played well in the 3rd set but I was so frustrated to see him losing all the key points (and match points) by hitting the ball long or into net. He was no beaten by good winner from Davy but he simply killed himself .....again. As his fan, I am happy that he did win French Open and Wimbleton again this yr. But other than that, at Federer's standard, he only has an average yr. He only played well for 4 months this yr and in 5 tournament (from Madrid Master to the US Open semi). Other than that, he did not play well in all other tournament. He gave the Australia Open and US Open title to his opponents by playing a very poor 5th set. During his old peak period, there was a scare factor for most players to face him like they had already lost the match to Federer before the game even start. Players has no chance to survive from his stable serving game and normally cannot stay long to exchange groundstroke with Federer as he could always make you run and make all kinds of amazing shot on the line like he is the only master on earth who know how to play tennis. He is no longer that the same Federer. Players can make him run now and he is always the one who is more frequently making unforced error when he has to play each point. His serving game is very unstable. Hope he can still improve a bit next yr or he will keep going down.
